SOURCE: what does a P1296 trouble code on a 2001 VW jetta

P1296 is a cooling system malfunction. The two things that will set this DTC is a defective Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor or the thermostat.

Fault codes explanation:
P0725 = Engine speed input circuit; CAN-BUS no communication with Engine Control Module (ECM); Invalid data received from ECM; damaged ECM.
P1850 = Data-Bus Powertrain missing message from ECM.
P1875 = Transmission Automatic Hall Effect sensor power circuit short to battery

I recommend you to access the ECM memory using VAG or similar diagnostic tool. But if you need to check a few things before scanning, I would recommend the following checks in your case:
- check the battery cables (clean and tight contacts)
- check engine ground cable (clean and tight contacts)
- check ECM (Engine Control Module) connectors and ground, the ECM is in plenum chamber under the windshield.
Having checked this wiring (most likely culprit), and made sure that contacts are clean tight, and connectors are fit, if the problem persists, (unlikely), you would need to get the codes using a VW equipment, to get the proper codes.
PS: there are some bulletins refering to ECM software updates on your model, so you should also check these out, if the problem points to ECM replacement eventually.

My o2 volkswagon has codes p0725, p1850 and p1780. What do they mean?

There is a forum thread at the link. Check the powertrain fuses first. Then look over the pcm connector and harness. Apparently the guy on the thread finally replaced the pcm.

OBDII codes

The other codes are related to the transmission control system. O would focus on getting the car started. I will guess you are getting no sparks. This could all be caused by a bad crankshaft position sensor.

2002 vw jetta engine code 1296. what does it mean.

My 2001 Jetta GLS Check engine light is on and I am getting 2 trouble codes P0171 and P1296. What does this mean? My temp gage is also reading nothing at all. 1 more thing I noticed when my low fuel light came on the other day my temp gage began to work but when I filled up with gas the temp gage went to zero again.

P1296 indicates that the car isn't warming up fast enough or at all. Determine if the gauge is faulty by checking the temp of the engine with an infrared thermometer. A healthy engine should operate at 190-200 deg. F fully warmed up. It may be that the gauge is accurate and your engine isn't reaching optimal temp because of a faulty thermostat. It also could be that the engine is actually warm and the gauge is wrong. Use the search feature, we've gone over this one a few times. Also note that P1296 has been mis defined a few times too. P0171 has been discussed here a million times. Check the trouble codes section and the search box.
,,,,, I pulled this off of the OBD home page, It is a close shot for your car, Hope it helps.
