What are the torque specs for the head bolts for a 1999 sportage

The KIA shop manual (both my hard copy and kiatech) show the locations of the bolts on the "Cylinder Head Cover" --aka valve cover-- and they provide the torque at 35-52 lb-in (4-6Nm), but they don't specify a tightening order.

Normally crisscross middle to outside edges, hand tight, half torque and full torque. Better to do the job right, do it once, replace the gasket.

The head bolt torque on a 2002 Kia Optima is 45 ft/lbs of torque. Always make sure you use a good torque wrench to get it right. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you change the head bolts that's the safest bet for trouble free operation. But, I've changed head bolts on Hondas for years and they never stretched. I know this is for a Kia. My best guess is that it's not necessary since the Chilton based manuals don't say to do this.

If the head is torqued down to specifications and it leaks, then I would say, otherwise. Even torque is more important than bolt stretch, especially if the bolts don't stretch so much that the head gasket can't be tight against the head and block.

check your service manual for torque specs or look up the torque specs online for the number or letter it has on top of the bolt

The gasket has metal torque limiters.use your own judgement just dont break the bolts
