When shifting automatic trans in reverse theres a hesitation

2001 Saturn sl1, 1.9 engine

  • Anonymous Apr 02, 2009

I have the same problem this car was recalled for a bad transmission and gear shift issues

  • krystal_t6 May 09, 2009

When the car is not hot, shifting into reverse cause a very abrupt slam. The only time the car does not make this slam while shifting to reverse is when you have been running it and it is at operating temperature. Having the car off for even a few minutes then shifting into reverse causes the abrupt slam. I have just replaced the motor mounts in this made only a very slight improvement. (99,000 miles)

I think what you were saying is your reverse slams, and only when you give it gas.
You can try to do the reverse slam fix, which is easy to do:
Reverse slam fix

If it doesn't work, your valve body is probably bad, here is how to swap it, in case you are up for the challenge:

Liter engine automatic

you probably have a bad motor mount. Look under the hood, passenger side of engine compartment cast iron mount with rubber insert. Is the rubber insert worn visually inspecting. If you cannot tell, have a friend start the car, emergency brake on, foot on brake, shift from park to drive, does the motor jump in the mount? shift from drive to reverse, does it jump again. If so bad mount, local auto repair store should carry. you will have to jack up the engine carefully not much and not directly on oil pan, you just have to relieve the weight on the mount to replace. several m10 bolts, 15mm socket to remove. retighten fasteners to 58+/- 9Nm of torque. good luck.

Check engine light blinks

The reason for hesitation of vehicle when accelerating is due to lack of transmission fluid. Check your ride for any leaks and repair them. Filling the transmission tank with fresh fluid after repairing may solve the problem.

99 saturn sl2 has lost reverse

Reverse & 2nd gear share the same clutch pack.Usually when reverse goes out you will get wierd shifting into 2nd or 3rd.Most likey the Input shaft retaining nut has come loose inside the first clutch housing. It can be accessed from the trans end cover but it will take some disassembly. The trans doesn't have to come out to correct this problem.I repaired many saturns with this problem. The only parts you will have to buy is an end cover gasket(paper gasket) & 41/2 qts Trans fluid.Decent mechanice could do this in about 2-3 hrs or less. The service engine light is probally on due to trouble codes from the trans controller most likey DTC P0723 No 2nd gear.hope this helps

2001 ESPACE 2.0L AUTO NO REVERSE HELP PLEASE

your trans has lectronic controls to operate the shifting of your trans. If there is a defect, a fault code will be stored in the computer, called a DTC. You need to have someone with a scan tool check for the fault code. It is likely a solenoid that is not working or stuck.

Get the codes first. Autozone can run the test for free on engines, maybe trans codes too. Call your local Autozone or big parts store and ask them.

SECTION 307-01: Automatic Transaxle/Transmission 2001 Escape Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Transaxle Description The CD4E automatic transaxle is a four-speed, front wheel drive automatic transaxle with electronic controls for:
  • Electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid for shift quality.
  • Shift scheduling.
  • 3-2 shift timing.
  • Coast braking.
  • Torque converter clutch control.
The transaxle features a four element torque converter with a torque clutch and a geartrain that includes:
  • Compound planetary gearset.
  • Chain drive.
  • Planetary gearset final drive.
  • Pinion and side gear differential.
The hydraulic control system of the transaxle has five solenoids that control:
  • Shift feel, through line pressure control.
  • Shift scheduling, through shift valve positioning control.
  • Modulated application of the torque converter clutch.
  • Timing of 3-2 shifts.
  • Engine braking during coast operation.
----------------------------
Solenoid Valve Body Assembly The solenoid valve body assembly contains the transmission fluid temperature sensor (TFT) sensor, as well as five PCM controlled output devices:
  • Electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid.
  • Shift solenoid A (SSA).
  • Shift solenoid B (SSB).
  • 3-2 timing/coast clutch solenoid (3-2 T/CCS).
  • Torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid.
---------------------------------
You may need your PCM, Powertrain Control Module reflashed by a Ford Dealer.
Try disconnecting your battery for 1/2 hour and then reconnect and see what happens. It will run a little rough and shfit hard until it relearns your engine/trans characteristics.
Let us know results of tests and DTC codes if you get them.
