The only way to check why the check engine light is on is to have autozone or a mechanic put a scanner on the car and read the engine codes. This will tell you exactly what is wrong. If gauge is fine and car smells hot. It is probably due to plugged exhaust unless you have a wire laying on the exhaust manifold and it's melting.
