I have a 1999 silverado Z71. When I engage to 4 HI I hear a grinding noise in the front end only when I turn the wheel left or right. No problems in 2 WD.
This sounds like a constant velocity joint in the axle shaft that runs from the center of the front differential to each wheel. When they go bad or are full of mud they can just pop if they have grease in them or they can just grind and pop if they are full of mud. I say this due to the fact it only occurs during the turning process that it makes this noise.
That Sounds a lot like you have a Gear Broken off inside the Transfer Case. Not a Cheap fix or Easy Either But, Necessary
