When the engine warms up it starts to run very rough and bucking and chugging when slowing to a stop. I bought a code reader and got the code for System too Lean (bank 1). I am going to clean the MAF sensor, but it seems more serious than that. Also, the exhaust is very strong smelling. Any suggestions?
Hello, you have a vacuum leak in the closed loop section of your emission's system or theO2 sensor is bad.
First check the EGR valve for sticking and loose or broken hoses. Let me know what you find. Good luck.
This link might help with checking the EGR and other things.

Thanks, I will give it a shot tomorrow and let you know what happens.
I checked all the vacuum lines and nothing was loose or broken. I am having trouble locating the evap canister, according to the book it is the only year jeep (1998) that it is located in front of the rear axle...but it's not there. Now the problem is not constant, sometimes it chugs and sometimes it purrs like a kitten. It is going to drive me nuts! I am going to check the O2 next, just need a volt meter.
I have a very similar problem ( i think) , most of the time it runs smooth and then for no reason will start chugging at idle ,never cutting out but occasionly revving up like someone has blipped the throttle then keeps chugging, drive for a bit and it will smooth out. I keep thinking it will die on me , but not yet. No pattern to it ,will happen hot or cold. Makes moving forward slowly in traffic awkward and jerky.
