2003 Impala fails to shift into OD 'til it warms in cold weather

I have a 2003 Impala with 84000 miles and had the transmission flushed and installed a new filter at 76000. This winter, from a cold start, it started to fail to shift into overdrive until the transmission had heated up while driving at freeway speed (65 MPH) and it was less that 20F outside. When the engine temperature gauge gets up to 160F and the transmission finally goes into, and stays in, overdrive for the rest of the trip.

Any ideas?

I have the same issue with my Impala, except mine is an 2001 with over 110,000 miles on it. It's been doing that for the last couple winters. If it matter's, My chevy truck does the same thing. It's a 1999 silverado 2500 with over 100,000 miles also. Must be a GM thing. No problems though, just won't shift in OD till it warms up a little bit.

Why tracker transmission lock in cold weather?

You have valves inside the transmission and electronic controls inside the transmission. When cold, valves do not work because the fluid is too thick. Once warm the fluid thins out and allows tranny to shift OK. You can burn your tranny up by not letting it warm up.

Transmission on my new 2010 won't shift until the engine gets warm. Sometimes I have to go up to a half mile in cold weather before it shifts. Car has less than 3000 miles on it.

Your transmission fluid may have frozen recently, which causes it to become "gelled". The solution may be as simple as having the transmission fluid drained and replaced.

'98 subaru wont shift from 1st unless rpms are high- morning only

When you first start driving it usually takes atleast 4 miles to warm the transmission to operating temperature. The temp of the motor may say it is warmed up, But, the trans fluid and differential fluid only begins to warm as you drive and the parts are actually working. THe computer has sensors that keep the trans from shifting to OD until the temp is up as not to add stress to the motor until warmed properly. Hope this helps and have a good day.

2003 Chevy Impala transmission

Did you have it serviced or rebuilt, If you had it rebuilt I would take it back to the trans shop for warranty repairs.
If they just changed the trans filter I don't think it would cause your problem. You just have bad luck with the slipping trans

Starting in damp weather 1993 240 wagon, auto/od, 235k miles

perhaps you need a new cap and roter a new spark plug wire set. they don;t like moisture. also check to see if you have any broken or leaking vacuum hoses. the worse case senerio would be that your head gasket is leaking--at cold temps a little antifreeze will enter until everything warms up and it seals shut due to metal expanding. but since you say it's cold weather only--this probably wou;dn't be the case. good luck.
