I accidently tried to insert the wrong key into the ignition of my 2004 Range rover HSE. When I realized it I got out the correct key and it would not insert. An electrical clicking noise in the steering column produces a relay noise but the key will only insert about 1/4". Any suggestions

The noise you can hear is the motors still working but the worm nut has broken inside the steering column. The motors still work with the memory system you have but they are not moving the wheel as the worms are still turning but the nut which is attached to the steering column will be floating. Remove covers and check this before you order the new parts as i am informed that a full column is required in order to replace this little part. As it in no way affects the actual steering of the wheels you may be able to repair this without going to major expence. Hope this helps. The same happened with mine but i just wedged the steering in one place and left it. Its been two years now and i can still hear the two motors working every time i put in the ignition key but without the steering wheel adjustment. Ask yourself do you really need it

Unfortunately, there is a trick to replacing the battery.
1) Open the Driver side door.
2) Open the Bonnet and take the battery cover off.
3) Use your remote to lock and unlock the car (keeping the driver side door open)
4) Pull the Negative Lead from the battery first, followed by the Positive Lead.
5) Change or replace with charged battery.
6) Closed down Bonnet.
7) Your windows, sunroof, and key FOB will not work... so follow the next steps.
7a) Insert your key, with door closed into the exterior lock on driver's side.
7b) While turning the key to lock the door, hold down the "lock" button on your remote for 5 seconds while in "lick" position
7c) Your remote will reset, and you should be able to use your remote now
7d) While driving, roll each window down twice. On your third attempt, you should only have to touch the window button, and the window will have reset
Enjoy your Rover!
