VW Touran very strong diesel smell

After running for a while and engine gets hot, the car begins smelling very strongly of diesel. It is the smell of hot diesel, almost as if it is being boiled. The smell comes into the car and irritates the back of your throat and eyes. What could be causing it. There is no diesel leaking on the floor, and I can't see any diesel leaking on the engine. Could it be dripping injectors? The fuel consumption is also quite heavy - I get max 800 km per tank (60 l) which works out to 7.5l/100km. Thanks for your help

Normal a dripping injector makes a knocking noise when you first start up. To me it sounds like a leek. Try looking at the pipes any were above the exhaust or turbo. For the smell to come in to the car the leek will probably be at the front. I'm only guessing here. But I had the same thing on my range rover and it was a joint in the fule pipe spraying on to the block..Good luck

Thank you. I have found that there is a small pool of diesel lying on the gearbox. I am still tracing to see where it comes from exactly. So, when the gearbox gets hot, the diesel evaporates and comes into the car. Thanks a lot!!

SOURCE: Strong Diesel Smell inside HJ Turbo Diesel Landcruiser

Since you didnt notice any change in the performance of your engine, ill presume there's nothing wrong with your fuel injectors.
look for moisture around your gas tank cap, the hose and clamps going down the tank, around the fuel gauge sending unit of your tank. have your fuel line checked from the tank to your fuel injection pump, give particular importance around the connections of your fuel filter, fuel pump, and the return hose from your fuel injection going back to your tank.
Diesel do emit strong hazardous odors that may stick on carpets inside your car.

SOURCE: fuel leak, strong gas smell inside and outside of car

when you look for a fuel leak, make sure the engine is running. the fuel lines will be pressurized and you are more likely to spot the leak. if you see fuel squirting, be careful since it under a lot of pressure. it might look like a single strand of a spider web. also, you should wear eye protection since gas in the eye would be a bad thing. needless to say, don't light a match or lighter for light to find the fuel leak. since gas is explosive, you probably should take it to a shop if you can't fix it. it could be dangerous if gas drips on a hot part. fuel vapors are explosive too.

SOURCE: what will cause a strong gas smell after turning off engine

Check the fuel cap gasket to be sure it is not torn or worn. After that check the vent hoses that run from the fuel tank to the charcole canister located somonwhere under the hood. Is the smell stronger under the hood or toward the rear of the car? If you cannot find the problem, a fuel leak is dangerous and should be attended to ASAp by somone that has the experience to repair the problem
Good Luck

SOURCE: strong gas smell and poor gas mileage

If the gas odor is coming from the engine, than the problem is most likely a cracked or poorly seated fuel injector.

Smell fuel near carburetor in front.

The carb float chamber is vented to atmosphere and under certain conditions there will almost always be a fuel smell near the carb, especially for those with a developed sense of smell. Petrol is a liquid with highly volatile elements and in hot weather or a hot engine those elements will readily evaporate and then the vapours will drift where they will.

Any abnormally strong or stronger than usual fuel smell should be investigated and while most leaks will be easy to find with a cold engine and cold weather it is worth noting a tiny fuel leak can create a strong smell in mild or hot weather or with a hot engine and be virtually impossible to find.
It will probably be necessary to remove the air cleaner to check for carb flooding and it is also worth noting in the case of an engine driven fuel pump there is a possibility of a leak into the engine crankcase.

Motor oil went up a lot in the crankcase

Assume you mean the engine oil level on the dipstick is getting higher?

I would be surprised if it is hydraulic oil (unless you know different) but I suppose diesel fuel is a possibility though it is many years since I have heard of such a thing, especially if the engine is otherwise running smoothly.
The last time I saw that was on a small diesel engine with a conventional dpa type injection pump driven by oil-fed gears. The pump had sprung a leak and begun to fill the engine. There was no mistaking the strong smell of diesel...

An internal coolant leak can have the same effect but without the smell of fuel.

Strong exhaust smell from my kia sportage 2009

This is from incomplete combustion . The problem is that the injectors are squirting instead of atomising. Have the injectors tips replaced at a diesel pump repair shop.

2002 vw jetta, gas smell & shaking after 60mph

Well if the check engine light is on then there is something wrong, now you need the engine control module scanned for fault codes to begin to understand the problem that turned the light on, you need an OBD2 code reader (about $35.00) as a minimum to read the codes.
