2012 Passat - Front driver door will not latch

Tried using remote to operate locks and they seem to work. Door feels like something is stuck in latch and will not latch. Got in and drove to an errand, got back in and door will not close. Cannot fathom what this would be. Dealer, of course, advised to have it towed to shop - do not want to go to that expense.

Any chance you opened the door in freezing weather? Pulling a little harder on the latch will destroy it in this car - already replaced one myself. The latch mechanism where the rod connects to the actual door assembly is plastic - doesn't take much.
FIrst make sure your latch is in the "ready" position (videos all over YouTube for this) so it can grab the striker when you close the door. If it is, and will not flip forward to secure itself on the striker, you need a repair.

It sounds like the latch is stuck closed, Not allowing it to go over the pin that the door latches on. If it is stuck closed open the door handle and use a screwdriver or something to open the latchThey started putting plastic on the latches on cars to make them quieter, the plastic starts to wear and causes the latch to stick.

i had a similar problem on the front doors .after taking it to a garage for a quote £ 180 i read into it and there are micro swithches in the locks so with a gentle tap with the hand the door unlocks . hope this helps it saved me the money

SOURCE: 99 passat doors don't lock right

Fixed it! Four broken wires which had corroded through because of water getting in. Reconnected with suitable wires = all works again! The wires are near the control unit under the LH floor. You will see tell-tale blue corrosion from copper wires seaping through the insulation tape.

can you lift the lock knob up at all?? If you can lift it and the door stays locked, the linkage inside the door is broken.. if you can't lift it up, then the linkage is most likely seized... you'll need to remove the door panel to actually see it

fuses are usually in the glove box or under the drivers dash or under the drivers side hood either physically inspect every fuse by pulling them one by one or the aid of a test light and a good ground to the test light

Drivers side door closed and will not open.

Remove inner door latch and try operating the rod manually (vice grips). If locked, spray everything inside the door with WD-40 or the like and try operating the lock.

My BMW x3 2005 back door will not close. The latch doesnt seem to catch. We tried locking and unlocking the doors you can hear the mechanism working but latch is catching. Lock/latch seems to just spin...

Hold down the "open" button on your remote and simultaneosly pull the inside handle of that door open. I just had the issue with my driver's door and as my son tried to "help" (he's 9), one of the passenger doors also got stuck! After not finding a non-tech response, played around some until the the dran latch obliged on the front door. Repeated on passenger door and whew! :-)

Removal

Disconnect battery ground cable (14301).

Remove front door trim panel (23942) and watershield from front door (20124).

Mark the location of the bolt retaining front door glass run front retainer (21572). Remove the bolt.

Check all rod connections against the appropriate illustration. Correct any disconnected or loose connections and check operation before replacing parts.

Remove power door lock actuator (218A42).

Disconnect the rods from the front door latch (21812). The front door latch remote control link (21940) and the latch-to-lock cylinder rod cannot be removed at this time because of the rod's end configuration. Remove wiring from clip on front door latch shield.

Remove front door latch control cylinder rod (22134) from the door lock cylinder (21985).

Remove front door latch remote control and link (21818).

Remove the front door latch retaining screws. Disconnect the door open warning lamp switch (14018) if so equipped. Remove the front door latch from the front door.

NOTE: Do not damage anti-theft shield.
Remove anti-theft shield from the front door latch.

Remove front door latch remote control link, front door latch control cylinder rods and door open warning lamp switches from front door latch where applicable.

Installation

Follow removal procedure in reverse order.

Tighten front door latch retaining screws 4-8 Nm (36-70 lb-in).

Doors won't close

Manually UNLOCK the door button or slide. HOLDING the OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE in the OPEN position, with your other hands finger, LIFT OPEN the latch, and close your door. Hope this helps.

the door ajar switch in the drivers door latch is is either shot or sticking.open drivers door spray some WD40 in the latch,open and close door several times and if the switch is only sticking this will free it up.
