I have a problem with my Mazda "bunny hopping" V6 automatic transmission. It only seems to happen when I am at around 1.5k-2.5k RPM trying to maintain one speed. There are no check engine lights, but it starts to hop, seems to lose power and wont down shift. Even at hwy speeds. The only way to stop it is to release the accelorator completely and let roll then depress again or depress the accelerator more to rev the engine higher. What could it be?

If you ever have an oil leak it really should be fixed right away unless this happened all at once. Go to a local mech or if there is an Autozone around go there and have them check the Engine Light code for you for free. You will have more info to work with.

Does your Mazda have a standard trans (clutch), or automatic.
If it's automatic, the tranny might be slipping, and if it's a standard shift the clutch may be slipping. Does the actual driving speed (not engine rpm's) seem to stay the same when this happens? If you are still traveling at the same speed even though the engine speeds up, it's your tranny or clutch. I don't think the timing belt and tensioner have anything to do with this. countrycurt0

When you say it has an erratic idle, I initially thought the Idle controller. On a forum post I found, it seems that it could be your PCV valve, or as simple as needing your fuel injectors cleaned with a bottle of fuel injector cleaner! I have posted the forum, and where you can buy a bottle of this cleaner. You can also buy this fluid at your local autozone, or pepboys. Just dump it in your gas tank. They also mention to never run this car dry.

Idle control valve...
HIGH DOLLAR PART, 400 to 500 smackers....
You can try cleaning it, I beleive that is the same 2.0 liter motor they put in the ford Probe? I could be wrong, I know they 2.0 has issues with the idle control valve..
Anyway, if you want to try cleaning it, try this link... its to a Probe, but should be the same as yours...

If its not the same as that, you can probably search the net and find a site specific to your car... but it really should be the same motor, even the haynes manual for the Probe has sections for both the Probe and 626 in it...
Good Luck!!!
