First take off the negitve battery. The starter is located on the back right top of the tranmission - it should be two 17 mm bolts: one short and one long bolt. follow the postive cable wire it go straight to the starter.

Where is the starter located in a 1996 Nissan Maxima?

The starter is underneath the air filter/scoop to the right of the engine. You have to take the air filter assembly out of the car in order to get at it for replacement.

96 Nissan Maxima. Has new starter. Wouldn't

Did you have the new starter tested befor you installed it? Was their a lot of corosion on the battery cables? The cables might be corroded as well cousing too much resistance for the starter to crank.
