98 Toyota 4Runner- Can a faulty towing cable/wires

98 Toyota 4Runner- Can a faulty towing cable/wires cause the rear brakes to not work? The top and side brake lights are not working, as well as the liscense plate lights. Replaced the brake pedal switch, no luck, fuses all seem ok.. Rear tail lights/turn signals work as well.

my beat up towing wire harness caused some sort of power surge in my lights. tore off the towing wire harness and connected wires back to original set-up. It blew both of the rear brake lights and the top light as well. it also blew the liscense plate bulbs as well. replaced all bulbs and everything is working properly. awesome.

If you are talking about the brake lights.....yes. If you are talking about the brakes themselves...no.

  • Anonymous Jan 10, 2013

Thanks for responding so quickly, yes, I'm talking about the lights themselves, the tow-wiring harness is trashed and corroded. I traced the wires back into the rear right side panel where it plugs in to a 'converter box'. Could a bad converter box cause this too? Thank you again.

SOURCE: 95' Buick regal, 3rd brake light works, tail

I dont have a diagram but the brake light switch has to feed the turn signal switch, Either that wire has a bad connection, or the turn signal switch is bad. Jiggle the turn signal lever and see if the brake lights try to work.

The rear brake lights do not work. This includes the center brake light at the top of the rear hatch

although I have not experienced this problem in the exact vehicle you have, General Motors has had problems with the turn signal switches in many of their vehicles. The turn signals may still work properly, but the electric signal from the brake light switch passes through the turn signal switch (also called a combination switch) before it goes to the brake lights. I assume you have no problem shifting out of park or you would have mentioned it, which tells me the brake light switch is functioning properly. First thing to do, as always is to check for blown fuses. If it is a blown fuse, you then need to determine what caused the fuse to blow. If you have towed a trailer recently, it could have been faulty wiring in the trailer, or it could be faulty wiring in the trailer lighting harness of the Escalade.

Pass. side trailer turn and brake lights out 1999 ford explorer

if your vehicle lights are working all the fuses will be good. follow the cable from the towing socket on your vehicle , it will most likely go behind one of the rear lights to connect into your cars system,
check your tester where the cables join and you should find the problem. hope this helps.

How to fix a brake light

all lights must be working in order for the lights to work in some cars...it's possible that you may have a bad ground wire to the light socket or the you may not be getting power to that socket, which means you have a bad wire. Check to see if you're getting power to that socket with an electrical tester first.

I recommend that you tighten the ground wire screw for starters. since the vehicle is ten years old corrosion may be the culprit.

Pressing brake causing blinker issue

The trailer harness that was installed probably has a short inside the box that distributes power to the trailer pig-tail. Remove the trailer harness. You problem will be cured.

Automatic transmission 98 4 runner

You have a blown brake lamp fuse.
Start the vehicle, depress the brake, and have someone observe to see if you have brake lights. No brake lights = no removal from park W/O pushing the over-ride switch.
FYI: Brake lamp fuse failures are most always created by a faulty trailer wire harness.
