Hyundai Elantra 1999 timing issue

It's a '99 Elantra, have you ever replaced the timing belt? It is a belt not a chaing, so it is very much should have the belt changed. After 13 years if you haven't done the belt yet now appears to be the time to change. I have an '05 and we changed it over a year now.

Yes, you are just about spot on for the timing belt. Leave the water pump - if it ain't broke don't fix it. Changing the belts does not disturb the water pump so wait until it actually starts to leak, and that could be in years to come.

NO .but its a good idea to replace it as half the work already done when they change the timing belt {i will be having mine done this sept {2011} also worth changing the auxiliary belt too that's the drive belt that you can see on the left of the engine that drives all the devices like the AC and water pump a water pump should cost around 70 pounds and timing belt 100 and aux belt 60 pounds work from a none franchised dealer like halfords service centre about 200 for there work go to a main dealer and take out a second mortgage!

Most manufactures recommend changing the Timing belt at around 60,000 miles or 7 years. The have been known to last a lot longer than that but it is cheaper to have it replaced than to risk critical and expensive engine damage if it breaks.

Most belt manufacturers recommend 60,000 miles, the car companies use that for the guide line, Of course a lot of belts will go 200,000 miles, but if they snap, your engine goes with it. So it is best to changes it now and then. Check out your setup there, you will probably be changing the belt tensioner and the water pump at the same time while you are in there. Not sure about your car, Check it out. Hope this helps.

Whats a difference between timing belt and drive belt , for my 2004 Elantra Hyundai cernter is asking to change the drive belt and flush the Hyd oil, car has 53,000 miles on it

a drive belt refers to belt driven items like alternator, power steering, water pumps and the like.

A timing belt is cogged to precicely hold the relationship between the crankshaft and the valve train. Timing belts are usually located within covers, as the loss or damage to this belt exposes engine damage and failure.

I would go to auto zone and get a diagram and the timing belt and do it yourself and the water pump (no it does not have to be changed everytime the timing belt is changed but if the car has over 60,000miles then it is best to change them both) it is not that hard especially if the car is not out of time just make sure you disconnect the negative side of the battery

I have a 2001 Elantra with 75000 miles on it and it started to idle rough.
I put it in gear and it didn't change. When it's in park the tack stays at 700 to 800 RPM but it still runs rough. does anyone know what the promblem is.
The check engine light never has come on.

SOURCE: "Cruise" on a 5-speed '00 Hyundai Elantra

Actually a really simple thing. Too elaborate on what the first response put, simply click that "Cruise" button so the light is on. Next, when you're at the speed you want to mantain, click the button on the end of the windshield wiper switch. If you want to drop your speed after that, simply hold down on that same button. If you want to raise the maintained speed, simply slide in the button facing you on the windshield wiper switch. If you want to turn OFF cruise control you can do it one of two ways, either press the "cruise" button again, or simply tap the brakes. If you want to accelerate briefly but maintain that cruise control speed, simply use your accelerater pedal.
