ok , assuming you didn't unscrew the whole "twisted metal thingy" . it hinges at the top , place your bulb into its slot, it does have to be exact to fit right , there is a tab on the bulb , make sure it is aligned , swing the twisted metal thingy down it will contact the bulb , with 1 finger push the end of the thingy lol , under the piece that is staionary at the bottom of the light assy , and let go , if your lucky it will lock , if not try again , it is very stupid i agree , good luck .

is it the twisted wire thing your having a problem with or unpluging the bulb ?
the locking mechanism is like a saftey pin , push in at the bottom of that wire and tilt to one side or the other , it will come out from under its little tab , its stupid , then the clip will hinge out of the way , getting it back together is even more fun , holding the bulb in place and re locking the pin .

My 2003 Altima had a similar issue...Long story, short....I located a blown fuse (location 49 & 50) for the low beams in the IPDM E/R and replaced it. The headlight worked right away. My IPDM E/R was under the hood close to the front passenger side head light and coolant bottle.
Does your car have daytime running lights? It may be the drl module. The relays are part of the IPDM (intelligent power distrubution module) and are not serviceable. If the drl module is faulty the symptoms are, no drl, and one or more lights not working. Usually not grounding within the drl module.
if you pull up on the filler tube for washer resivor it will come of and give you more room. next you can see a big gray bubble twist it counter clockwise and it will come off the push the wire tab and release pay attintion to which way the light is in reassemble in reverse order
Need to disconnect ground to battery before replacing light bulb or fuse will blow. Fuse is located in engine compartment next to windshield washer fluid.
If its like my 2001 there's two bolts that U need to remove and the headlight housing looks like it should come out. Then just twist the low beam connector and remove bulb and replace.
a lot of newer cars have seperate fuses for both left and right head lights both high and low beam. you should check your owners manual to see fuse locations and designations for your head lights.
If you just want to replace the bulb yourself, this is a good website.
http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/Nissan-Altima-Headlight-Bulb/Nissan-Altima-Passenger-Side-Headlight.htm If the website does't get your headlight fixed... You might have a blown fuse. It could be in the IPDM E/R location under the hood. This is next to the coolant bottle. Remove the coolant bottle with two screws and lift the cover to the IPDM E/R. Just set the coolant bottle aside for now. The low beam fuses are 49 and 50. They are 15A fuses. To be more precise, they are located on row 2, columns 2 and 3 (column 1 being closest to the fender of the car). Hope this helps.
