1991 mercedes 420sel cuts out intermittently

could be a boggle of things but lets start with basics first the gas tank
debries in tank and filter clogged which when it cuts out the suction is lost and debries fall back to bottom of tank again dirty fuel sifon out and filter check for debries
bad thermo sensor it can cut off if stuck in position
loose wire from change in your plugs rotor cap might have hit a wire by accident
air filter clogged

generator failing
throttle body needs cleaning

now the more rough end
the crank or cam sensors
speed sensor
bad ground now the 1991's were known for a burn out ground melting of the shielding around ground wires next to exhaust and hot areas of car this had been remedied by simple longer wire replacement and or new shielding added to wire

Engine idle speed too fast some times. idle speed

Three things to check for:

1) High idle switch is on..*(vehicle thinks AC is running but it isn't.
You can try turning on the AC and see if the engine slows down to confirm this one.

2) Sticking or worn out Idle Air Control or IAC, You might get a check engine light with this one.....you might not if it's a mechanical failure.

3) Simplest of all. A vacuum leak. You can get the engine vacuum read while running if you go to a mechanic with a vacuum guage or an OBD 2 ecu code reader. There should be specs on what vacuum levels are normal for you car at idle.

Good luck and be careful!

Mercedes 300 1992

You have to check ur idle speed controller, that is located at the back of battery protected by a plstic shield, remove the shield and remove a small controller located next to the computer compartment and check the fuse, the problem wd b solved by replacing the fuse otherwise u will have to replace the idle speed controller, if this will not fix the problem, ur computer has to be reset by company, hope this will fix the problem

Too fast idle running speed.

Typical idle for this motor is right around the amount you have described. Check to see if any check engine lights are on, or if the ABS light is on. A typical issue with this motor is the OVP relay that when not operating properly causes the engine to rev much too high (~1500-2000). Also do your revs drop significantly when you put the car into gear? If not then there really isnt an issue. When the motor is idling too high and you stick it into gear the car will typically lurch really hard.

My 1999 v6 camry is idling way to fast 1000rpm when hot

i would start with checking the spark plug cables in some cases if there is a bad wire it can cause a irratic or high idle being a 96 it is probably fuel injected so i would check the throttle cable and throttle body it may need some cleaning or a sensor may be off such as the idle control valve.
