The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

I assume this vehicle is equipped with an 'AUTOMATIC' transmission?... If so, then the shifting works electronically and is managed by the TCM (Transmission Control Module). The EPA (Environmentlal Protection Agency) and it's adherence with the CAA (Clean Air Act) has mandated manufacturers to develop the technology needed to reduce automobile emissions, and part of that is telling the transmission when to shift (up or down). Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there.
