Re: transmission does not always shift into overdrive
Governor pressure sensor or solenoid is going bad. To replace them drop the tranny pan, remove the filter , and the parts are pretty ez to get to. These aren't cheep thou, but replace them as a set. Parts will probly run about $200.

Get a phone book and find local transmission repair shops, call them and ask how much to rebuild yours, or to exchange yours for a rebuilt one. You do not want a new transmission, you want a rebuilt. It is to old to spend that much money.
I would suggest replacing the transmission. This is a very common problem that occurs in Dodge and Chrysler especially in the caravan and 1500 trucks. I was informed by a Transmission Tech friend of mine that cheap internal parts are to blame. When he installs rebuilt mopar tranny like this, he actually upgrades the rebuilt tranny with better quality parts and that usually extends the life from 70k miles to about 150k miles. I would guess you have 65k miles or so on your truck by the sound of it. Am I close?
My 95 Cummins Dodge had the same problem and adding "Lucas Transmissiion Fix" cured it completely and permanently.
Thier claim is as follows:
Lucas Transmission Fix is a non-solvent formulas that stops slip, hesitation and rough shifting in worn transmissions and completely eliminates most seal leaks. Use in any transmission for preventative maintenance.Use also in light duty manual transmissions to increase shifting ease and transmission life.
Key Benefits
Contains no solvents
Lowers operating temperatures and stops foaming
Can be added to existing fluid without draining any out
Effective in an extremely high percentage of cases
Have you changed the fluid and filter every 2 yrs or 36k miles?
Are you using atf+4 only?
If all the above are a yes then check the throttle cable to the transmission as it should be adjusted to move at exactly the same as the throttle and it they are out of adjustment the transmission will not shift at the correct time and wil eventually cause early failure, also after a rebuild the tranny has to be reflashed by a dealer
My 1999 dodge 4x4 2500 diesel transmission surges back and forth between gears at 45 mph. I had my transmission rebuilt and it keeps happening. What is going on.
my truck exactly the same...
Transmission dosn't shiftup threw gears sometimes.
takes 10 min to shift into 3 and overdrive just change the heatercore in it
my transmission will not downshift from overdrive and also is sliping
