At start up the vehicle makes a loud grinding sound. The sound goes away once the vehicle is started. If the vehicle is turned off after driving and restarted the sound does not reoccur. This only happens at start up after sitting for a long period of time. The vehicle currently has 74,000 miles on it.

SOURCE: a 1995 chevy s-10 blazer will not start because of flooding.

I had the same problem but not with the popping sound. Try checking your vacuum hoses. My problem was with the PCV Valve elbow. It is located under the air intake hose.

1988 Chevy suburban Starter some times makes a loud grinding sound when trying to start the truck

The brushes on the starter are worn where you hear the gringing. The grinding comes from the worn areas trying to turn over the fly wheel. Or the fly wheel teeth are doing the opposite to the starter. Hope this helps
