I have noticed my 2002 GMC Envoy (87,000 miles) loses RPM while idling at the stop light. The RPM jumps between 5000 and 10000 a few times while idle then rests at 5000. I notice this only happens when I come to a stop after driving on the highway. What could be the problem? Would it be solved by a basic tuneup?

Probably a Vaccum leak which Vaccum hoses need to be checked or Vaccum hoses needs to be reversed or it could be the position motion sensors.

Try the fuel filter. Sounds like the engine might be running rough due to weak fuel pressure. Its cheaper to replace, especially if it's still original from 04. Try running some injector cleaner through a couple of tanks of high octane gas.

Roaring engine noise in cab when idling. Idles at 500-950 rpm..When raising rpm in idle noise goes away.2002 GMC Envoy 6 cly.

Should idle between 500-600. Clean your throttle body with the battery disconnected to help with the fluctuation. The roaring very well could be your fan clutch. Fan clutches are a known problem with our platform. If engaged, will sound like an airplane.

2002 gmc envoy stalls when turning and slowing down

I am going to assume the check engine light is not on.
I would check the throttle body to see if it needs to be cleaned, and check the idle air control valve to see if it is working. The computer controls idle speed by the amount of air coming into the throttle body.
The ac problem is probably something different such as low freon or a cooling fan problem.

Sounds like you may have disconnected the battery. Does the rough idle only happen when the defroster or A/C is on? If so clean your throttle body with throttle body cleaner with the battery disconnected. When finished, drive it for 5 or so miles with the defroster / AC off to let the computer relearn the settings. This will solve your problem.

I had a similar problem with my 2005 Ion. When slowing to a stop or sitting at idle the lights would dim. It never happened at speed though. It turned out that my throttle body was dirty and because the engine wasn't breathing well it wasn't spinning at a high enough RPM to keep the alternator producing the correct voltage. I cleaned the throttle body and the problem was solved as well as the rough idle problem my car had.

I have 2002 audit quattro TT with 180k miles. When I do a normal acceleration the car surges and rpm drop but pick back up. If I accel hard it runs fine. Also at idle at times it varies 200 rpm like a

this sounds similar to a problem i had. as the rpm went over 2000 the engine would stop for a split second and then kick back in.
after a few days looking my garage finally found the problem was a faulty air mass meter.
this cost me £200 in total to be repaired.

Problems with stalling and high idle

I had problems with the idle and with the car stalling and found that it was a failed oxygen sensor. I replaced it and the car runs great now.
