First u need to check the wires usually they are 3 wires , 1 will be earth 1 will be 5v ecu feed and 1 would be the feed back to ecu. With the sensor disconnected you
The meaning of the sensor fault content is: 1. The sensor circuit has a short circuit or an open circuit, and the signal voltage value is not within the normal specified value range. 2. The performance of the sensor can not achieve the effect that the sensor should have, and the device may be defective or aging. If this type of failure occurs repeatedly, the possibility of replacement is quite large, but the sensor is expensive.

Sounds like a failure of the engine coolant temperature sensor, which is a known weakness on the B5 chassis Audi A4 (model years 96-01). The sensor is relatively inexpensive ($20-30) and if you call up ECS Tuning (www.ecstuning.com) or Pure Motorsports (www.purems.com) with your VIN number, they can send you the correct sensor (there are three types, identified by color of the connector - black, blue, or green). Changing it is somewhat of a pain due to its location, but it can be done in 30-40 minutes. You have the 12 valve 2.8 V6 - take a look at www.audidiy.com and www.12v.org (two dedicated Audi sites) - there are a ton of tech procedures on those sites, and you'll likely find what you need there - a detailed, step by step, photo-referenced procedure on how to change the sensor.

The crank shaft position sensor is to tell the cpu when to allow spark at the right time. IT normally works or it doesn't. Lack of take power for take off can be associated with low fuel pressure for the injectors and MAF/MAF sensor faults.. have a pressure test done on the fuel system to check for regulator failure.
