318i new ignition tumbler problems

Removed old tumbler (spinning issue)New tumbler won't seat properly. key won't turn. I can slide old tumbler back in place with no problem. Maybe worth noting, A second problem I was having was (old tumbler) key would turn ,dash would light up but would not turn over. Hoping the worn old tumbler wasn't allowing switch to turn completely.

Hello!

Sounds like a stuck ignition relay.
Try tapping with something ******* the ignition switch when this happens, see if it helps.
If it does consider replacing the ignition switch.

Hope this helps!

1975 dodge sportsman rv ignition tumbler removal and replacement

To replace the ignition tumbler in a 1975 Dodge Sportsman RV, you will need to follow these steps:
  1. Remove the steering column cover: Start by removing the screws or bolts that hold the steering column cover in place. Once the cover is removed, you should be able to access the ignition switch and tumbler.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connections: There should be two electrical connections that attach to the ignition switch. Disconnect these before attempting to remove the tumbler.
  3. Remove the retaining screw: Use a screwdriver to remove the retaining screw that holds the tumbler in place.
  4. Remove the tumbler: After removing the screw, the tumbler should slide out of the ignition switch.
  5. Install the new tumbler: Insert the new tumbler into the ignition switch, making sure it is securely in place.
  6. Reinstall the retaining screw: Use the screwdriver to reinstall the retaining screw.
  7. Reconnect the electrical connections: Reconnect the two electrical connections that you disconnected in step 2.
  8. Replace the steering column cover: Once everything is back in place, replace the steering column cover and secure it with the screws or bolts.
  9. Test the new tumbler: Finally, test the new tumbler to make sure it is working properly and that the RV starts and runs smoothly.

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2008, 3.7. Problem is ignition switch won’t turn off. Keeps cranking starter. The lightening bolt on dash comes up. Vehicle won’t start. Help please

I saw this problem on a 2010 chev diesel. We had to disconnect the battery. His problem was the ignition switch shorted out causing current to feed the starter . There maybe a broken connection with the switch mechanism that is not allowing the switch to change the internal selection slide.
Now if the key is stuck and not returning, then the tumblers may have come apart . This would require a new key and tumbler assembly.

Replaced original 2001 Olds Intrigue Ignition lock cylinder-won't turn now

Pull it out and reinstall it. Chances are you did not get the new parts properly engaged with the opposite/complementary stops on the steering column.

Ignition switch won't release key when it is put in park. But when I removed switch and key tumbler, the key tumbler/cylinder releases key. Why won't the key release when it is in park?

Most newer models have a safety feature called
shift interlock. This prevents the key from being turned back
to the lock position if you forget to place the gear selector in park.
Depending on the model,
If it uses a cable, it may be sticking or needs adjusting.
If it uses an electrical solenoid. may be blown fuse or park switch.
Tap, shake, and pull up on the shifter and make sure it's in park.

Took my ford focus to a dealer because key would not turn either way. They said it was the tumbler and would have to be replaced. They jusy called and said they installed new tumbler and reprogramed the...

The reason that the key wouldn't turn must have come from a malfunction of the ignition switch or the connecting rod, rather than the just the tumbler. Since the dash lights & gauges work now, at least part of the ignition switch is working, but apparently not the part that's engaged when the switch is turned to the "start" position.
By replacing just the tumbler, the dealership tech would have jiggled the connecting rod just enough to reseat it (and fix the jam that was causing the key to fail to turn in the tumbler), but didn't fix the real problem, which seems to be a worn out ignition switch or worn connecting/actuating rod.

Pass key 93 old"s 88 informatoin center say's

You have a broken wire going to the ignition tumbler inside the steering column. To fix it correctly, the tumbler will need to be replaced. Probably something for the dealer, or a locksmith as the new tumbler will have to have the same resistance chip in the key as the original.

Don't know how to get old ignition switch out to put new one in.

How to remove an ignition cylinder for repair or replacement if your Grand Cherokee's ignition won't turn. This is due to the tumblers failing. Key must be tuned to the on position. Then you press in the lock tab to release it so you can repair yourself or more likely, bring it to a locksmith to have the tumblers replaced. This can be done to match the existing key. Obviously, you'll have to get it to turn to do this. Usually a good dose of WD40 and tapping on the head of the key (straight in) will free it up temporarily. This would be the view from underneath the column after removing the two shroud halves.

It sounds like one or more pins in the lock tumbler portion of your ignition switch has slipped out of position and jammed the cylinder so that it will not turn. These pins, which are actually shaped more like thin washers, are made of soft brass and gradually wear over time. Especially if you or another driver of the car had your ignition key on a keychain with a bunch of other keys, the weight of that key ring will also push and pull on these pins over time, increasing the odds that one of them will go out of alignment and cause this kind of a problem. That's why you'll see car enthusiasts have a single ignition key on a keychain or have it be detachable from the rest of their keys--it saves a lot of wear and tear on the ignition switch.

To fix this problem, you'll need to remove the lock tumbler portion of the ignition switch and take it to a locksmith to have it rebuilt. A locksmith will take out the old washers and springs and replace them with exact new replacements. Assuming the lock tumbler isn't cracked (they almost never are), you'll end up with a switch that works like new. This process is also usually much cheaper than ordering a new ignition switch, and it also re-uses your existing keys. Of course, a locksmith can also replace the washers in a brand new ignition switch to match your existing keys.

Removing the lock cylinder could be a bit of a problem if you can't wiggle the ignition switch at all. However, don't try to force the cylinder back into the "off and can take the key out" position. If you take the key out at this point, there's a good chance you'll never get it back in again. On GM cars of this vintage, there's usually a little hole somewhere on the bottom of the ignition switch. Normally, you push up into this hole with a very stiff wire while turning the key to the "on" position. This will release the lock tumbler, and you'll be able to pull it out of the steering column. Note that this only pulls out the lock tumbler; the actual ignition switch will still be left in place, permitting you to start the car with, say, a screwdriver instead of a key.

You may have trouble pulling the lock cylinder if you can't rotate it enough to use the proper tumbler removal procedure. If that's the case, the best thing to do might be to call in a locksmith. It will cost you a bit more for them to work on your car instead of just on your tumbler, but they have additional experience that helps them know how much force they can apply to a stubborn lock without, say, bending or breaking off the key (and even more expensive scenario for you). Plus, if they screw up, they get to buy you a new ignition switch, so that expense isn't coming out of your pocket. If you can still start your car, you can save locksmith house call charges by driving to their place of business and parking in front of their store.
