I got mercedes S280 2000. The SRS Airbag light is showing on dash. what does that mean and how much it normally cost to fix. I am in New Zealand.
The SRS lights up on the display and the drivers seat goes all way back, all electricity to rearmirrors, seats, automatic lights etc don't work.
This car has a long list of faults since it was bought brand new from the dealer. When I turn off the car and insert the key the "other" way, it works fine again...

The light is telling you there is a problem with a component of the system and it is disabled. You would need to have someone scan the body computer for trouble codes to proceed.
Only a compatible scanner is going to turn this off.Don't try to do it yourself, as with any air bag/srs (supplemental restraint system), these units contain what amounts to an explosive charge, and if not handled properly, by trained folks, they can very easily cause death, ansd a nasty one at that.As long as the system detects a snag, it will continue to turn that light back on, even if you do get it turned off. The system does a circuit check soon after the car is started, on this system, and the only way to turn off that light is to fix it. Could be as simple as a clockspring, so have it checked. This is one of the only things that I'm not really willing to give much info on, due to the potential for disaster. Sorry, it's just the old grease monkey looking out for your safety. Most cars and trucks can be re-set by disconnecting the negative batery cable for about 10 minutes...this should auto re-set to factory specs...if the light comes back on, you have wired into the wrong system. Hope this helps.
SRS stands for Supplemental Restraint System (Airbag). If the light os on then the airbag system is disabled and will not work in a collision.
To remedy this you must retreive the codes from the airbag computer, this must be done with a scan tool capable of reading that system on a mercedes. Once this is done repairing the problem should be fairly easy.
Most likely cause of a SRS light being on would be a disconnected wire or a broken clockspring.
SRS = Safety Restraint System. Work all your seatbelts, make sure they snap in & release properly. If you have the system where it detects someone in seat without belt on, may be a sticky switch under seat,may be able to fix it just by sitting in seat then getting out of it, or hitting seat cushion with hand, look for things like that. Also check owners manual for location of possible air bag fuse blown. If you can't cure it, stop at shop or dealer & have it checked, just in case it is airbag not working.
