Check the charging relay if working. You can find it in the fuse box which is either in the engine compartment or under the dashboard on the drivers side legroom.

SOURCE: 89 Honda Accord Battery Light is On

The FuseLink is blown. It is a 100 AMP in-line fuse on the red wire from the alternator.

SOURCE: Headlights causing battery drain while driving?

Hi:
Though your car seems fine without using the headlights, you have a charging problem, and need to get a couple things checked out. First make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. Your alternator belt should also be checked to make sure it is serviceable and properly tightened too. Your alternator should be checked under load, and lastly, your battery too. Most auto parts stores, such as auto zone, will check your parts for free,so you should only be spending money on what is broken!

SOURCE: New alternator and battery battery light stays on and car dies

Have you checked the alternator fuse? The regulator needs power from the fuse to turn on the alternator. The old alternator could have blown the fuse.

SOURCE: My battery is boiling and smelling. Is it a faulty battery, or is my alternator causing it to over-charge the battery?

You need to replace the battery to start with. you cannot test the charging system with the battery the way it is or you will get a false reading. Once you replace the battery, you can then test your charging system to see if the alternator is causing the problem. If its charging more than 14.8 -15 volts, its too much and you will need to replace the alternator.

SOURCE: Charging problem.. Wont charge battery

The instructions for installing a new alternator usually read to fully charge the battery (12.3 - 12.8 volt range). Otherwise, the alternator will be damaged when it initializes. I have seen some extreme damage result from installing a new alternator with a low-charge battery. The torque required to turn an alternator when damaged in this scenario is unbelieveable!

Either the alternator is not being energized with the key on, or the main wire from the alternator to the battery/starter is bad.
Have you checked output on the back of the alternator with the engine running ?

I not that familiar with the honda civic vtec, but most cars have a voltage regulator for the battery. Many of the new alternators have this item belt-in, but others are separate components. You may want to check to see what your design is for your model.

First get a new battery or at least charge the one in the car, and make sure that the connections are tight and shiny and clean when removed.

The problem with the engine not running could be because the battery is shorting out the alternator or drawing down the voltage so low that the computer can't run the car.

I would charge the battery for a few days and then remove it and take it to your local auto battery parts store or Walmart or Sears and have them check the battery for you (bad or good).

My 03 honda civic wont stay on and it is not the battery and it has gas

Check your alternator voltage make sure it is charging the battery. Cars now days have to keep constant voltage to run because all the sensors and computers. When voltage drops below 10 everything goes screwy.

Check the function of the alternator. Charge the battery with a battery charger or jump start the engine. While the engine is running use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the battery posts. Red to + and black to -. You should have between 13.5 − 16 volts. If you do not the alternator is bad or the drive belt is loose. If the alternator checks ok then something is on that is drawing power from the battery and running it down. Check under hood, trunk, glove box, and interior lights. Can also be a brake light switch causing the brake lights to stay on. In rare cases it can also be a stuck relay such as a power window relay. From you description I think you will find the alternator is ok and your problem is something is on and running the battery down.
