Ambient Temperature Sensor

Hi. I have a 523i series (1996) whose ATS is reading -40. Can you please advise the exact location of this sensor for repair purposes? Thanks Peter NB: It is badged as an M Series although the steering wheel is not the 3 spoke type.

Thanks for your quick response. I found it was located on the underneath of the chasis (protected by plastic cover) beside and to the front of the right hand front wheel. There you go. I also confirmed it is NOT and M series - merely a cheap badge. Thanks.

Check in front of the radiator, it should be on a small metal bracket, the sensor has 2 wires going to the connector on it..

Temperature display isn't accurate

Hi Dale. Look under the front bumper either on the left or right trim panel. The trim panels are triangle in shape. An outside temp sensor usually sits in this area. The sensor may be missing. BMW has the sensor, wire, and connector available sperately if they are missing or damaged. It will cause the outside reading to be -40 and can cause the a/c compressor not to operate.

Air conditioner will not come on. The tempeture gage is reading -40. The sensor is not reading properly.

Hi ruswashingto,

The air conditioner may not work properly if your ambient temp is reading -40. The a/c control unit monitors ambient temp so that it does not operate at too low outside temps. I would recommend fixing the ambient temp sensor and rechecking your a/c operation.

2001 S60 T5 ambient temperature sensor problem

It's been a while since you asked but in the event you still have this issue - I would definitely start with testing the sensor to start and if found faulty, replace.

On my 2007 S60 T5 I experienced similarly erratic ambient temperature readings which effected my A/C operation.
While awaiting the arrival of the replacement sensor (~$15) I removed the door panels and treated the various wiring connectors to some contact cleaner and dielectric grease during reassmebly.. Despite a Volvo Service Bulletin highlighting potential problems with corroded wiring harnesses; in my case the connectors all looks clean and corrosion free - and after this exercise there was no improvement with the erractic ambient temperature readings.

Once the sensor arrived I was able to easily replace it. It took less than 15 min and required only a plastic pry bar and T15 Torex wrench. Testing the sensors with an DVM I found that the new/good sensor read 167K Ohms, while the old/faulty sensor was open with no resistance reading.

Thus on the basis of my personal experience I would recommend testing the sensor to start and if it is found to be the problem, replace. If it is not faulty then proceed with cleaning wiring harness connections.
