I have a 1998 Chrysler concorde (3.2) engine. When I stop at a red light the oil light flickers. Other then that when the cars is parked ans hut off, sometimes it will start, shake then die, so I have to rev the engine or floor it from dying. Any suggestions?

Oil light flickers at stop lights on a 2000 Concorde 3.2L LXI engine.

  • dmwagner Apr 02, 2009

My oil light started doing that today as well. It's the first warm day we have had since I bought the car a month ago. 3.2L engine. My mechanic put 5W-30 in the engine instead of 10W-30. I changed the oil today with 10W-30 and the problem seems to be gone. I will report back.

Oil light comes on at stops after engine is warm

if your saying that your low oil pressure light is coming on (or flickering) at engine idle , but goes out when engine is above idle (going along) this is sure sign you have a problem in your engines oil pressure system :
serious !~

some common reasons for this to occur are:

worn out engine parts allowing oil to leak out and not lube parts properly (hi engine miles)

low oil level -not enough oil inside engine to get pumped around proper

restriction in oil system - blockage in oil passageways even oil filter will count (hi miles)

3.5L V6. Why does oil pressure light turn on intermittently?

1. As a basic measure I would make sure the correct grade and spec oil is going in the engine. You can no longer trust that a local mechanic or even a dealer service center will necessarily use the required product as stipulated by the manufacturer. It is always better to buy and supply your own so you know the correct product is being used.

2. I would not assume there is a problem with the oil pressure warning light even though there could be.
The first thing the mechanic should have done when you reported the oil pressure issue is to hook up an independent mechanical oil pressure gauge and check oil pressure when the engine is hot at different RPMs. Any oil pressure issue will usually show up at idle when the engine has been warmed up properly and the engine oil is hot (unless you have some kind of intermittent oil pressure relief valve that is sticking). Just replacing parts without actually knowing what the oil pressures are at different RPMs is being sloppy and negligent.
This is what you need to do now. Contact a business that can hook up their own pressure gauge to your engine and have them check the oil pressure readings at various RPMs when the engine is fully warm. If there is a low oil pressure issue it will show up on the oil pressure gauge. As you have a new oil pump there should be no issue now with oil volume or a sticking oil pressure relief valve which on your engine should be part of the oil pump assembly.

3. Worn engines will not be able to sustain required oil pressures. Oil pressure is not produced by the oil pump. The oil pump produces oil flow but the resistance to flow is what produces the oil pressure and that resistance is created by fine clearances between operating engine parts especially on the crankshaft and components connected to it. Once the engine wears the clearances increase and the oil flows past the parts much more easily and produces/builds much less pressure.
How well your engine with over 90000 miles has been maintained depends on how often all the owners changed the engine oil and filter , whether they kept the engine oil level up to full (most owners rarely ever check oil levels between services) and whether they always used the correct product. Manufacturer oil change intervals shown in service schedules can be 10000, 12000 miles or more which is much too infrequent for the type of use 95% of private vehicles experience which typically are on the severe to very severe use end of the spectrum. Engine oil typically needs to be changed at least at half the mileage shown in service books (at least twice as frequently) and thus at least every 5000 miles if you want your engine to last.

Why does my oil light come on while idling. I just had the oil/filter changed, checked & fluid level good? 196,000 miles

Hello Thomas,
Not enough oil in the engine. Maybe Incorrect grade of oil. Check and carefully top up if necessary.
Or possibly a defective Oil Pressure Sensor.
This link might be helpful, try it.
Good Luck!

2006 Chrysler 300M 5.7 Hemi, all of a sudden the oil pressure has dropped to "0" when in idle or at a stop sign, and the light comes on, then when accelerated the light goes out and pressure resumes, and...

The check engine light means there is a trouble code stored in the car's computer. The first thing is to get this read out, to home in on the problem. Autozone will do this for free I believe.

It is not uncommon for the oil light to flicker at idle when hot, as long as the pressure rises OK at revs. Get an oil pressure reading done by temporarily replacing the pressure sender unit with a pressure gauge, and you can then tell if there is a problem in that area.

Oil pressure light at idle

when the light comes on at idle do you notice any engine noise different from the norm.if not then the oil pressure sensor(ops) is bad/weak and will need to be changed.if you hear abnormal noise with the light on then you will have to have teh oil pressure checked to see if its within specs.

Sometimes the oil light flickers when I'm at a traffic light. I just had my oil changed and it is still doing it.

Either they did not put enough oil in when they changed it or you are having problems with your oil filter by-passing. If your oil is full and there is no problem with the filter then you have a serious problem with you bearings. When they get worn, the oil goes through them too fast to hold the oil pressure up. If you have over 80,000 miles on it, the bearings could be the problem. It is fine when the oil is cold and thick and when the engine RPM is up but when the oil is hot and the engine is idling it can't develop enough pressure. Put in a heavier weight oil and sell the car quick. It is not worth rebuilding or replacing the engine.

Answer
NO: 08-36-99
SUBJECT: Engine Oil Pressure Light Flicker
DATE: Oct. 15, 1999
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves adding a terminal/wire/vent to the oil pressure switch connector.

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.7L ENGINE.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
With a hot engine the oil pressure light may be on or flicker on at idle.

DIAGNOSIS:
Verify engine oil pressure as described on page 9-21 of the 1999 Concorde/Intrepid/LHS/300M service manual (Publication No. 81-270-9140). If engine oil pressure is within specification perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:
Qty Part No. Description
1 05017800AA Wire Terminal/Vent

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
Raise vehicle on a suitable hoist.
Remove engine oil pressure switch connector from switch.
Remove sealing dart from the empty cavity at the rear of the connector.
Pull terminal locking ring outward from front (switch) side of connector to gain access to terminal locking tabs.
Install wire terminal/vent, p/n 05017800AA, in place of the removed sealing dart. Slide locking ring back into place.
Attach the connector back on the oil pressure switch.
Spot tape the wire/vent to follow the harness towards the top of the engine compartment.
