Temp. predicted to hit zero overnight, so added some anti-freeze to the overflow tank. Let idle for 20 minutes to mix. Shut off engine and noticed clean oil puddle under tail pipe. Inside pipe was oily. Is this a problem?

Are you sure its oil!? As it gets colder, more condesation will be produced as a byproduct of combustion.Also produced is carbon. When its so cold the exhaust is cooled so fast (especialy at idle), this moisture really forms fast. If your oil consumtion is normal,then what your seeing is normal. Keep that oil and filter changed and pcv system working properly.Now ,if the vehical is useing coolant regularly and no external leaks are found, its possable its being drawn into the engine and partial burned.This would be evident by a blueish sweet smelling steam out the exhaust all of the time.This could also give a excess tail pipe (oily residue).Hope this helps!Are you sure its oil!? Start by putting approximately 3/4 of the anti-freeze in slowly. Use pre-mix or you will need to make sure you add in a 50/50 ratio. Once to that point let it sit for awhile and then start it, let the motor idle, turn on the heater to HOT, watch the level in the radiator as it will expand when warm. Gradually add the rest of the anti-freeze to top to the bottom of the radiator cap and then replace the cap. Now add the anti-freeze into the Burp/overflow tank to the cold level. Let the car warm completely and drive it around the block. Let the car cool completely and then check for the level in the burp/overflow tank. If low add to the cold line. I would then check for the next few times you drive and if it stays at the cold line when it has sat overnight you should be fine.
white smoke is caused by-- water or anti-freeze entering cylinder . if in radiator or the overflow tank. it will look like a chocolate milk shake. check on oil dipstick for traces of water or anti-freeze. also, a bad head gasket will let water or anti-freeze in combustion area. head gasket symtoms if bad. whats happing is when it starts to get hot the coolant expans and some gos into the overflow and if the vacum valve in the radiator cap is bad it will let coolant out but not back in. So try replacing the cap and refill the radiator and see if it stops caps are inexpensive around 10 dollars. Hoped i helped
Open the radiator drain plug and let out as much coolant as will drain';
Replace drain plug and refill the sytem with distilled water
Run the engine for for few minutes until it is warm (not hot);
Repeat steps #3, #4 and #5 until you've effectively replace all of the
coolant with distilled water. You'll know your finished draining the system
when only clear water drains out.
Drain the system one last time (now only residual distilled water should
be in your cooling system);
**** out all the coolant in the overflow tank (I use a Turkey baster or a
huge syringe with a short length of rubber tubing.)
Replace the radiator drain plug.
Add undiluted anti-freeze to the system;
Run the engine to mix the distilled water already in the cooling system
with the newly added antifreeze.
Check the antifreeze/water concentration with a tester.
Over the next few days, adjust to the desired antifreeze/water mixture
over the next several days. You'll likely have to **** out a little coolant
mixture from the fill cap to create room for either the distilled water or the
anit-freeze you'll be adding to adjust to the desired concentration.
Sometimes I adjust by adding either water or antifreeze to the coolant-
overflow tank which utimately mixes with the engine coolant;
Don't forget to add collant and/or water to the coolant overflow tank.
Yes, oil in the antifreeze typically comes from a blown head gasket. To verify, start the truck and watch the overflow tank you should see what looks like a back flow or bubbles. By the time the truck get to normal temp, it'll be obvious.
Look for a crack in the overflow tank. It will be somewhere along the bottom if there is one. The other possibility is that the hose to the tank is leaky and/or the lid to the overflow tank is loose and you are suffering from evaporation. Once you fix the leak, refill with a mix of 50% anti-freeze and water.
hi there is there alot of oil in the plastic overflow tank ? what color is it ? when did you notice it ? does the engine run good is it shakey ? take a peek at all ur spark plugs you want them all to look the same slight brownish color is normal. lots of white on the plugs means coolant is getting on them under heat and pressure they get clean too white this is usually a head gasket damaged and leaking a little coolant into cylinder burning and being exausted through the muffler and you might see a white smoke from tail pipe, saying that coolant would not be going in oil that way . if its automatic trans there is a transmisson oil cooler built into the rad now tranny fluid runs through the rad cooling transmission oil coild get from transmission into rad in turn, getting into plastic over flow container. is there coolant in the engine oil ? the oil level will be a little higher than normal if there has been coolant getting into motor ? theres also another way that ive seen coolant enter the oil through the intake manifold gasket its tough to decide ehere the leak is , does it run and idle smooth ?
after a long ride in the hot daytime sun after you turn off let it sit for 20 min then pop the hood and with gloves on swueeze the upper rad hose and check if theres pressure in it dont open cap as im shure you know. if there is a coolant leak depending on how bad it is you will notice that there will be very little or no pressure in you upper rad hose need to pressurize the coolant in order to cool engine correctly. well i hope i havent said to much at once , take a close look at all questions and write me the answers maybe we can pinpoint the problem for you
1 rad transmission cooler
2 real bad head gasket or cracked head
3 intake manifold gasket how does it run and idle
