Headlights work but not taillights what is the cause and how do i fix it?

First you need to determine if all lights in the back are out or just brakes lights or tail lights. Check fuses, taillights will have their own fuses. Could be a bad dash switch, which would be evident if brake lights work but not taillights.

Taillight works when headlights are on, but does not shine brighter when braking or signaling

Change the bulb. When you press the pedal the brake switch changes the circuit to the 21w brighter circuit for the brake light.

I'd be willing to bet your dash lights don't work either when you turn the headlight on.change the headlight switch, it has a short, it's only about 11 dollars at advance auto, and is fairly easy to replace. my 93 chevy did same thing, changed headlight switch, problem solved

Dash and running lights does not work, everything

The fuse to the taillights/running lights?
It can't be a grounding problem if both taillights and dash don't work.
If only taillights don't work, it would be suspicious grounding.

Chevy k10 headlight/taillight problem

the fuses are located on the left side of the drivers foot well. these trucks have problems with rot and when they start to fall apart the beds move around and short out the taillights and youll usually lose the dash lights with the tails but the headlights are separate.

1998 XJ8 Vanden Plas taillight problem

Check the electrical grounds for the taillights. In fact, get a diagram and check all the easily accessible grounds. Many of these are in the engine bay.
