I hit a bump the other day. car immediately started to run a little rough. recently had new converter and muffler put on. runs fine at first, after you run it for about 20 minutes big loss of power and very rough idle. cat is glowing red. muffler is making a pinging/ popping sound inside. had flow checked a muffler shop and it was good. but i dont think they checked it hot and it only happens when hot. he told me right side manifold was 180 degrees above normal and showed heat discoloration. checked O2 sensors. right side was broken causing engine to run lean. replaced but problem still occurs when exhaust starts to overheat. no codes present. thoughts?

I would agree with the hub bearing solution. I also have a 2001 Cavalier and recently replaced both hub bearings. The sound is quite loud and does get worse the faster you drive. Once I got mine replaced, I couldn't believe how quiet my car ran. My dad works with a guy who does a lot of work on Cavalier's and has noticed that first the left hub bearing goes bad, soon followed by the right after about 60,000 miles.

Running extremely lean. Did you replace the 02 sensors? They detect lean and rich conditions and if the previous problem was too rich, the 02 sensors may have set ecu to run lean because of their problem. Now converters are free flowing and the settings should have again adjusted itself if the 02 sensors haven't flaked out. Overheating is and a fire hazard.destrucive to a converter and as hot as you say they are getting is not good. Do this, in the intake ducting is a sensor call a maf sensor. It's in a metal section. See how dirty it is. Then buy a spray can of CRCelectrical cleaner and spray wash the sensor thoroughly. Do not touch, rub, or brush the sensors, Just rinse dirt away with spray. The sensor is delicate, sensitive and very expensive to replace. DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR! The spray will dry quickly. Good Luck and make sure you have a clean air filter. Let me know if you will please.Ned

Either your timing belt or chain has broken or the pistons are destroyed due to lack of oil, overheating or just you basic engine wear.
SOURCE: No power, Burning smell, Idles rough, engine light flashes
could be your cat converter
also check dist cap and rotor

Please make sure you gapped the plugs to specifications. ( probably 35 thou' of an inch ) gap gages are very inexpensive. Also suspect the spark plug wires, check teher integrety as well the correct firing order. To check for short, in the dark watch for arching to ground ( visually ).
Hope that helps.
