Eliminating the a/c and shorten the belt

On most applications, no.
Herein lies the problem.
If you bypass the A/C compressor, you will find the belt too long for the application, and it cannot be shortened.
Whenever the car-maker builds the car, they will order the exact belt for the length the belt must be, with only a tiny fraction of an inch to spare.
That means no part can be added or subtracted for that belt to fit.
I have had several occasions to need a shorter belt to bypass the A/C compressor, and have found a way to do so, that would be to take a string or a thin tape measure and find the length that will work just with the remaining pulleys.
You may very well find that will not work either, because the engine pulleys or engine parts may get in the way of a shorter belt!
Too see what I mean, take the serpentine belt off, and try a string around the remaining pulleys, remembering to have the string exactly where it must go.
Also, most parts stores will not want to give you belts to "play with" to try to find the right one.
However, some stores will sell you a belt by size, not application.

You can try to search for a belt that is shorter and fits around all the components that need to run with it and still fit in the space you have.

There is a company which makes a bracket with another idler pulley on it for replace the A/c compressor. I believe it costs between $60 and $90 Dollars. Problem with replacing the belt with a smaller, shorter belt by eliminating a pulley is the RPM of the Alternator and the Power steering pump.

To make an explanation, if 1 loop of the original belt turns the Alternator once every 8 inches, then a 48 inch belt will turn the Alternator 6 times a cycle. A shorter belt will make more cycles around the crankshaft pulley, the Alternator and so forth.

This will increase wear. The Fan blade will spin faster and you can get less assist from Power steering if it is speed sensitive. Power steering may or may not be better at Parking and will surely flatten out more quickly at higher speeds resulting in high steering effort.

Without the conversion pulley, the Geometry for the spring loaded idler pulley may not keep enough tension on the shorter belt for proper tension.

But to measure for eliminating the pulley, just slip off the old belt and get a string with a loop on 1 end. Press down on the spring-loaded idler pulley and place the string around each pulley and then pull the end of the string through the loop until it is snug. Pinch off the position with your finger to where it seems that the tensioner is applying tension with more tension possible for a stretched belt.

Temporarily slide the end of the string off, secure a removeable knot, and then let the string handle some of the tension in the idler. Basically you are making a template for the correct belt length. If all looks well, the string can be fit on a belt sizer or just measure it. Remember the buy a belt with the same number of grooves.

Another thing to remember is the car will still try to adjust the engine idle for the A/C, sometimes even in the Defrost function, because that is how they are made. So you may have idling problems without the A/c.

yes just make sure nothing else is engauged with that belt if so you need to replace with a shorter belt to run to the other pullys if the belt only runns to the compresser then you can remove it.. i hope this helps

It may be possible and the shorter belt will not last as many miles as a longer belt. What also will be affected is any other pulley on the serpetine belt. Everything like your power steering pump, Alternator, and water pump will run at a different speed.

The power pulley is the crankshaft. The other pulleys work in relationship to how far the belt moves per 1 rotation of the crankshaft pulley. If the belt is shorter it will make more rotations per turn of the crankshaft. This will cause more wear on everything else turning. You also have to look at the way the belt runs on both the grooved side and the smooth side of the belt.

The pulley on the A/C can certainly freeze up, but it is made to free wheel when the A/C clutch is unplugged. Try unplugging the socket down at the A/C clutch so it can not turn the compressor.

You may have some luck with a Speed shop in regards to eliminating the compressor. A/C robs horsepower and would certainly be eliminated by a Speed purist.

it should just bolt into the factory holes where the ac was. If i was you i would just take off the ac and get a shorter belt. there should be a diagram telling how to run the shorter belt. that way you dont have any money in it besides the belt and you get the same effect.

Yes as long as you check with a shorter belt to make sure the shortened belt doesnt touch any other part.It would be easier to replace the clutch pack from the wreckers as it easy to remove from the compressor pump and replace.Pump doesnt have to come off engine.The biggest problem youll have if shortening the belt is that your power steer will likely be affected due to rotation speeds changing,anyway good luck and merry xmas
