Can't shift 2002 Durango into gear.

I have a 2002 Dodge Durango 4WD. Car starts but can't shift into gear. Gear selector will move towards reverse, no furtehr, but not engage when I put my foot on the brake. If I do not put my foot on the brake, it will not move at all. Note that the shift linkage(?) is sloppy and there seems to a lot of play, like a half gear index each way.

SOURCE: cant get shift out of park

It sounds much like failed linkage which is better than about anything else you checked.
I recommend procuring a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car. It will not only help you locate the source of your current misery but serve you well in the future too. They are available at about any auto parts store for ~$20 US

My 1999 Durango stalls when it’s cold and I shift into reverse. Once the motor is warm reverse works fine.

SOURCE: I have a 2006 Dodge

I have the same problem. If you take the casing apart that surrounds the shiffter you can push the little pink lever in with your finger and shift it that way. You have to do it from the front left of the shifter where the cable goes into the shifter. It is called the shifter control module. The overide button doesn't work with this problem. Dodge just told me a new shifter was $30 and the are on back order.

When I started my 2002 Dodge Durango 4.7L and try to put it into 'DRIVE' it got locked up and I couldn't put it into ANY gear. I had someone tell me it may possibly be the gear linkage. HE

Well, if the problem is in the linkage between the trans and the shifter, you should be able to disconnect the linkage or cable and move the shift rod in the transmission by hand.
Make sure the parking brake is set since it won't be in park.

Bad clutch or worse problem

No if the clutch was bad you could shift it into the gears but would not move at all if the clutch shattered. However if your meaning you can't get the gear selector to move into gears then you have a different problem.

How do you use 4WD on a 1999 dodge durango?

there are 2 systems.
one is a part time system only.the 4x4 locks and is for ice mud and snow.Driving full time will damage the transfer case. The other system is a full time system and the selector says 2wd,4wd part time ,4wd full time and 4 lo. if in full time,it can be driven all the time even on dry roads. The full time is really an all wheel drive system.
the 4low is a very low gear and the main shifter has to be put in neutral and then the transfer case put in 4 low.attempting to put it in 4 low while in "drive" will make a gear grinding noise.
getting out of 4 low is the opposite.shifter to neutral and then put it in 2wd and then in drive. The newer durango has an electronic transfer case with a dial on the dash. The 2002 was available with 2wd,4wd,awd and 4 lo on a switch. The 1999 has the lever on the floor .

When 4wd is locked in it pops right out, then when you coast backwards it pops back in

well with what ive dealt with in the past on those is bad tranfercase control modules your symtoms sound exactly just that the controll mod cant determine wether its in gear or not theres is also a sensor located towards the top of the transfercase that tells the module when its fully in gear the first thing i do is to make sure the transfercase is in good working order by pulling off the shift motor and putting it in gear manully
