SOURCE: Steering wheel locked up and ignition won't turn

Try pulling the wheel as far one direction as it will go in the locked position. Then while holding the wheel, turn the key. This has worked for me everytime (3x) I have experienced this.

SOURCE: steering wheel is locked nd wont unlock even with

Typically, the steering is preloaded. This happens when car is turned off with some steering assist being applied (whether you know it or not).

Often you have to manhandle the wheel in one direction or the other while turning the key.

Key is stuck in ignition and wont release. honda element.

Make sure the steering wheel is not close to one of the "steering wheel position lock stops" before turning the key.

There is some castor in the suspension. (all this means is that the wheels will try to return to straight ahead when the steering wheel is released. It has to do with weight of the vehicle and suspension geometry).

There are locking points in the steering system so that if someone hot wires your car they will only be able to drive around in circles. How far will they get?

Your key may be getting stuck in between the return tendency of the castor and the locking notch or dog or whatever.

Turn the wheel to lift up the front of the car slightly (that means more toward not straight ahead. It may help to think of the steering wheel as a jack for the front end of the car).

Once you lift the car off the key it should turn and come out easily

Started ignition change in lock position something stuck inside, pins or something last i seen ignition was hanging out now something about removing airbag and steering wheel to put in new ignition

Hard to say, not knowing the make, model, and year. But usually the ignition cylinder is held in by a spring clip on the side, and can be put back in without taking the whole steering column apart. But if that does not work, then the whole lock may have to be replaced. And that is hard because not only do you have to disconnect the battery to avoid injury from an airbag explosion, but often shear bolts have to be drilled out.

I have had trouble starting my Chevy blazer 2001, before it would feel like the ignition would get stuck, now the key won't turn either way and the steering wheel is locked and I can't turn it on

Try turning the steering wheel hard in each direction while trying to turn key. Wheel lock may be holding key. If not, sounds like you need to replace ignition lock cylinder or the ignition switch. Good luck, DW

Ignition switch for 2000 jeep grand cherokee is stuck

I'm going to answer this question since I don't know how the security system would affect the lock.
If you can get the key out of the lock, you may want to spray some WD40 or other lube in the slot where the key goes.
If that does not help, you should be able to drop the cover from under the steering wheel and disconnect the switch from the lock cylinder.
If the lock is still stuck, it may have damaged tumblers or something may be jammed with the shifter and steering wheel lock.

How do you change the ignition lock cylinder on a 1990 dodge dakota?

I just recently had to replace the ignition lock cylinder on a 1990 Dodge Dakota. If yours is anything like mine the ignition lock cylinder you need is for a 1989 Dodge Dakota. All you have to do to replace it is remove the center of the steering wheel and the steering wheel. Next you will have to remove the lock plate. After you do that you should be able to pull everything else out of the way. Then all you have to do is take a flathead screw driver and pop the old ignition out. You will need a steering wheel puller and a steering wheel lock plate remover. The best thing to do with the lock cylinder is to go to autozone or whatever store you use and match it up. Good luck

Key stuck in ignition -- cannot turn on or off. Can an ignition switch cause the tumbler to lock up? Or does the ignition tumbler need to be replaced? If the ignition tumbler needs to be replaced, how...

lets start simple.get a can of silacone spray oil and spray into the switch and keep moving key and you will find this will reliese the key,if you need to remove the ign switch dont panic as its a simple enough job.Forget about steering wheel and whatever, simply remove the outer plastic cover then this exposes the switch at the back of switch is a plug with wires pull it away ,then below the key you should see a tiny screw undo, and make sure the steering lock is not under pressure,ie steering wheel free, when trying to remove switch move steering wheel back/forward and switch should pull out.good luck.adrian,,,,

Locked Ignition but steering wheel free

Push gear selector up past park and it should loosen up, or press hard on the brake pedal. Shifter up past park usually loosens it up. Common GM problem.
