At very least, the timing cover will have to come off. Sometimes, not always, the oil pan, too. Check it closely after timing cover removed. The area where the oil pan, timing cover, and the engine block mate is a very leak-prone one. Consult a repair manual. Often a silicone sealer there is required besides the new gasket. I recommend you check the timing cover removal procedure for your tracker and understand it thoroughly before proceeding. Buy the repair manual (about $25) at a parts outlet, or check your library-they often have several manuals for reference or check-out.

SOURCE: Head Gasket?? Valve cover Gasket???

most likely it is the valve cover gasket. it covers the valve train where there is alot of oil to lube the top of the motor. if the head gasket was leaking it may have more signs of running poorly. also having coolant leaks also. so i will have to say valve cover gasket. now usally you may have a oil burning smell with it depending on the area of the lek but not always.

the valve cover can easily be seen when the hood is open. it is right on the top and where it meets the clyinder head is where the gasket is and the leak can be seen.

if you have more question please ask.

SOURCE: oil leak on a 90 storm

Start by totally cleaning the underside of the vehicle. Either complete wipe down or the easy way, take it to a car wash and spray it, then check for the leak - it should be obvious where it's coming from, good luck.

SOURCE: How to change a timing cover seal on a 1992 Geo

This is the same as a Toyota Corolla. Plan on replacing the timing belt and all associated parts. The problem is either the Camshaft or Crankshaft seals. Timing cover seal does NOT keep oil in the engine. The oil getting on the timing belt WILL cause premature failure.

Can you show me 99 Durango gaskets from top of engine going down ??

I'm sorry, but I can't provide visual images or diagrams. However, I can describe the general order of gaskets in a 1999 Dodge Durango engine from the top going down:
  1. Valve Cover Gaskets: These gaskets are located on top of the cylinder heads and seal the valve covers. They help prevent oil leaks from the top of the engine.
  2. Intake Manifold Gasket: The intake manifold gasket seals the connection between the intake manifold and the cylinder heads. It helps maintain proper air-fuel mixture and prevents vacuum leaks.
  3. Throttle Body Gasket: If equipped, the throttle body gasket seals the connection between the throttle body and the intake manifold. It ensures proper airflow into the engine.
  4. Exhaust Manifold Gaskets: These gaskets are located between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder heads. They seal the exhaust gases and prevent leaks.
  5. Head Gaskets: The head gaskets are situated between the cylinder heads and the engine block. They seal the combustion chambers and coolant passages.
  6. Oil Pan Gasket: The oil pan gasket is located at the bottom of the engine and seals the oil pan to the engine block. It prevents oil leaks from the oil pan.
  7. Front and Rear Main Seals: These seals are located at the front and rear of the engine crankshaft. They prevent oil leaks where the crankshaft exits the engine block.
  8. Timing Cover Gasket: If equipped, the timing cover gasket seals the timing chain or belt cover to the engine block. It helps protect the timing components and prevents oil leaks.

What is causes of oil leakage in timing compartment

Oil leakage in the timing compartment of an engine can be caused by a variety of factors. Some common causes include:
  1. Worn or damaged valve cover gasket: The valve cover gasket is responsible for preventing oil from leaking out of the timing compartment. If this gasket becomes worn or damaged, oil can leak out of the compartment.
  2. Worn or damaged timing chain cover gasket: The timing chain cover gasket is responsible for preventing oil from leaking out of the timing compartment. If this gasket becomes worn or damaged, oil can leak out of the compartment.
  3. Worn or damaged oil pan gasket: The oil pan gasket is responsible for preventing oil from leaking out of the timing compartment. If this gasket becomes worn or damaged, oil can leak out of the compartment.
  4. Worn or damaged crankshaft seal: The crankshaft seal is responsible for preventing oil from leaking out of the timing compartment. If this seal becomes worn or damaged, oil can leak out of the compartment.
  5. Worn or damaged camshaft seal: The camshaft seal is responsible for preventing oil from leaking out of the timing compartment. If this seal becomes worn or damaged, oil can leak out of the compartment.
  6. Worn or damaged Timing chain tensioner: Timing chain tensioner is responsible for maintaining proper tension on the timing chain. If this tensioner becomes worn or damaged, oil can leak out of the compartment.
  7. Worn or damaged Timing Chain: Timing chain is responsible for maintaining proper timing of the engine. If the timing chain becomes worn or damaged, it can cause oil leakage in the timing compartment.
  8. Low oil level: If the oil level in the engine is low, it can cause oil to leak out of the timing compartment.
It's important to address oil leaks as soon as possible, as they can lead to serious engine damage if left unchecked. To determine the exact cause of oil leakage, it's best to consult with a mechanic or take the car to the service center.

I have a 1987 chevorlete nova 1.6 liters it has a small oil leak I have to put oil in it ever now it's seem like it's coming from the front left side

is the 1.6 liter a six cylinder or slant 6 cylinder by any chance. if not. look for fuel pump location, is this where the oil dripping. or cover that has bolts that have a cover there, if so the gaskets for the cover or the fuel pump gasket needs replacing., try crawling down there when the car is running and see if it linking from the oil pan toward the front cover of oil pan. look where the timing chain location it on the front of motor, and the fan maybe blowing the oil over there. or it could be the vavle cover top cover where the lifters are located, the oil can be linking from there and running down the motor, you will idea the bad gasket remove the bolts, clean off oil, old gasket material, new gasket sealant and gasket sets, bolts down, lets setup few hours, refill oil levels, and everything should be okay.

Oil leak on driveway coming from front of engine

Dear Sir,
Here is the oil leaking Problem Identifying Technique

Engine oil leaks from the valve cover gasket are common.

  • The intake manifold plenum gasket may leak and cause increased oil consumption/burning and a spark knock during acceleration; the gasket should be replaced.
  • External oil leaks from valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets (front or rear), and the rear crankshaft (rear main) seal area are common. The rear main seal is an unlikely source. Normally, the bearing cap mating surfaces (as well as the sealing surface between the oil pan and bearing cap) are the source for the leaks.
  • Engine oil leaks at the distributor can be misdiagnosed as leaks from theintake manifold seal, oil pan gasket, or rear crankshaft (rear main) seal. A revised distributor is available if oil is found inside the distributor.
  • If the oil filter casing shows signs of distortion from excessive oil pressure, theoil pump should be replaced.
  • Often misdiagnosed as a leaking oil filter gasket, the oil filter adapter can seep from between the adapter and engine block.
  • Carbon buildup on the top of the piston is common. As the buildup increases with mileage and over time, symptoms may vary from light ticking, to ticking/hammering, to hammering/knocking noises. Fuel injector cleaner often solves the problem.

I NEED TIMING CHAIN DIAGRAM FOR VQ20 NISSAN SERFIRO 1999

    Instructions
    1. Remove Your Timing Chain
      • 1 Check your owner's manual for the recommended mileage for replacing your timing chain. Replacement for a Nissan Altima is 60,000 miles.
      • 2 Locate the timing chain. Replace it if the automatic chain adjuster (also known as the tensioner) is damaged or worn.
      • 3 Drain the cooling system and disengage the negative battery cable. Undo the spark plug wires and set the No. 1 piston at "Top Dead Center" (TDC) of the compression stroke.
      • 4 Disconnect the engine undercover, vacuum and fuel hoses, harness and connectors, drive belts, power steering reservoir, alternator and bracket, upper radiator hose, air duct, front exhaust tube, intake manifold collector supports, collector and exhaust manifold and the distributor.
      • 5 Prop up the oil pan and take out the front engine mounting, the valve cover, camshaft sprockets, cam bearing caps, camshafts, cylinder head bolts (reverse the installation order), cam sprocket cover, upper chain tensioner, chain guides and chain, idler sprocket bolt, cylinder head, intake manifold and cylinder head gasket and the steel oil pan.
      • 6 Place a steel cutter between the steel and aluminum oil pans. Slip the cutter around the oil pan's edge. Disengage the steel oil pan, baffle plate, oil strainer and the front tube.
      • 7 Secure the car on jack stands and place a seal cutter in between the oil pan and cylinder block. Slip the cutter around the oil pan's edge.
      Install Your Timing Chain
      • 8 Reconnect the crankshaft sprocket, oil pump drive spacer, idler sprocket and lower timing chain. Position the lower timing chain on the sprockets and line up the mating marks.
      • 9 Rub on an unbroken bead of liquid gasket and put in a new front cover and oil seal. Secure the bolt at 105 to 112 foot pounds (142 to 152 Nm).
      • 10 Eliminate any old material from the pan and cylinder block mounting surfaces. Rub on a 3.5 to 4.5mm bead of liquid gasket over the oil pan and cylinder block.

Do i need to drop the oil pan to ghange the timing cover gasket on a 95 ford mustang v6?

You can pull the motor mounts bolts and jack the motor up alittle, that will give you enough clearance to drop your oil pan. If you try and replace the timing chain cover without dropping the oil pan, you will more than likely wind up with an oil leak.

You should be able to replace the timing cover without removing the oil pan. The gasket set should contain gaskets allowing you to cut the oil pan gasket and put in a new partial gasket in this area. In the corners make sure you use some RTV sealant. If you are careful, it can be done. Like Bob A says you can end up with a oil leak without dropping the pan (unless you clean up the area and properly apply the RTV and gasket). If you have time to drop the oil pan, then I would do that.

    Timing chain

I'll assume you are going to replace the entire set (sprockets, guides, etc.) which I got from O'Reilly for $79.

First, set engine to #1 TDC.
Remove valve cover, fan shroud, fan, drive belt, water pump, 4 10mm bolts from bottom front of head, and 3 10mm bolts from front of oil pan. Remove lower front shield to remove oil pump. remove oil pump/distributor drive shaft, noting the orientation of the drive shaft.
Remove harmonic balance using correct puller (can be rented from local auto parts store). Remove P/S pump and A/C compressor if necessary. Remove timing cover.

IMPORTANT: Before removing oil thrower and distributor drive gear, note direction of oil thrower.
Remove oil thrower and distributor drive gear.
Remove chain guides, tensioner, chain, and finally both sprockets.
The new crank sprocket can only be installed one way, by aligning groove with keyway. The new cam sprocket will have 3 guide holes on the mounting flange, and you will need to align the knock pin with hole #2. Both sprockets should have a small dot (timing mark) on the right side of the sprocket when viewed from the front.
To install new chain, inspect chain to find the two brightly colored gold links. These two links must align with the timing marks on the sprockets. Assemble and install chain tensioner.

!!! IMPORTANT: Be sure to use new gasket when installing tensioner. Tensioner is oil pressure fed and a leaking gasket could allow chain slack, leading to premature wear or break.
Install chain guides, being sure not to let tensioner pop out.

!!! IMPORTANT: The tensioner must be fully compressed. To accomplish this, loosen the 8mm bolts in the passenger side guide (the shorter one). Compress the tensioner, adjust guide to remove slack, and tighten the two 8mm bolts.
Double check that everything is still lined up properly, and make corrections as necessary.
Install distributor drive gear and oil thrower.

!!! IMPORTANT: Ensure oil thrower is installed facing away from the distributor gear. If not, it could get caught in the distributor gear and destroy the two gears or cause engine lockup.

Before installing timing cover, inspect coolant and oil passages. If there is excessive buildup, a good system cleaner is recommended. Replace timing cover gaskets to prevent oil leakage. The best way to reinstall the timing cover is to remove the oil pan, install the timing cover, and reinstall the oil pan (replacing the pan gasket). If you don't want to do that, simply grease the top and bottom of the timing cover and lightly tap it into place with a rubber mallet. This is to prevent damage to the oil pan and head gaskets.
To install the distributor drive shaft, dab some grease on the top side of the gear to hold it in place, and line it up with the distributor. If you are having trouble lining up the shaft, pull it out and look at it from the top, and you will see that the flange is offset. At #1 TDC, the offset will be towards the front.
Install oil pump, being sure to use new gasket.

!!! IMPORTANT: Failure to replace oil pump gasket could lead to inadequate oil pressure, which will cause severe engine damage.

The remainder of the installation is a reverse of removal, using new gaskets where necessary. Before installing your valve cover is a good time to check your rocker arm clearances. This is also a good time to replace your drivebelt, and any other maintenance items as necessary.
