Check engine light came on also the trac light and can not get over 50 mph , with the car parked after the trip smell off gas. no apparant leaks.
Your problem is typical for these cars. The throttle position sensor is bad. Go to Auto Zone and have them check the codes to confirm this. i've seen this many times, that's usually the problem. It makes the car feel like the brakes are on. Hope this helps. Let me know. Phil
Had timing chain replaced and valve cover gasket replace, replaced spark plugs and engine light is still on my 2002 pontiac sunfire GT and car still running rough
I have a 2001 Sunfire Coupe my check engine light has been on over a year. Autozone says it is the gas cap so i replaced it and the light was on again within 24 hours. Mechanic says it is the gas cap. Well, since I have already replaced it and that was not the problem I won't bother to fix it.

i am having a similar problem that just started occuring about two weeks ago. the check engine light has been on longer than that but recently now the Trac Off light comes on by itself and when i press the gas the RPM's go but the car does not accelerate. It eventually jerks but still does not accelerate. I push the button to turn the trac on and off but it still stays on. I turn the car off and then turn it on and the light comes off and when i put the car in drive it jerks once and then runs fine for awhile. Just yesterday though it seemed to cause my car to stahl and turn off. it never did it before yesterday but it did it like three times in the span of a few hours. This is occuring on my 2001 Pontiac Sunfire. I checked other sites and looked for people with the same problem and one person having the exact problem siad he checked for codes and an error cod p0122 came up dealing with the Throttle position input low. Is this what is happening to my car and if so what does this mean? How do i fix it? How much is it going to cost?
I am having the same problem with my 2000 automatic Sunfire. The trac off light comes on, it downshifts into first from a stop and then winds out up to 2800 rpm before it "clunks" into next gear. Same from gear to gear. The check engine light is now coming on (especially after it takes so much to get into next gear) and last night while trying to coast in first gear (not touching the accelerator) the car died. I just had it in the shop for 3 days and the only thing found was a blown ABS fuse (they replaced) but could never get it to emulate the problem. A day after I get it back, it does it again. Is there any way to just disable the EBS system so this won't continue or is it all entangled in the ABS? Thanks!
Have the car scanned for a trouble code for free at Autozone or other parts store. Post the code here after you have a code. We can help you better if you have a code.
