How do I install headlight switch on 95 mercury tracer?

My low beams do not work nor my running light (it happened suddenly),
I replaced fuses interior and engine compartment to no avail.
I figured I buy a headlight switch on line and need to install it.

Thanks,

Jim pittsfield, Mass.

One wire provides power for both high- and low-beams from the light switch to the multifunction switch (on the steering column), and it is a light green wire. From the multifunction switch to the low beam lamps is a violet wire with white tracer, and to the high beams is a red wire with an orange tracer.

My truck is actually a '95 C1500 but I understand that they were the same model from 88-98. I have 2 problems - both electrical. On a recent trip, I lost both low beam headlights at the same time. ...

There could be a fuse for each low beam light either under the hood or under the dash. If not, then prob both low beams are bad.

If you have daytime run lights, the following may be of help.

There is a daytime running light module that controls both low beams and the daytime running lights. The low beam bulbs may be OK. The high beams will work fine as they are not controlled through the module.

It may be possible to disable the daytime run lights by cutting the yellow wire going into the module and then connecting it to ground. Tape off the other end.

This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

What does the fuse diagram look like for a 1988 mercury tracer, my high beams work but low beams dont

Headlights typically do not use fuses, but rather circuit breakers. That makes the lights function longer than fuses.

Have you checked to be sure that both low beams are not burned out? It is a common problem, if you do not notice the first light burned out.

If yours are a halogen style DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS with your fingers. Oils from your fingers will alter the glass, and it will burn out prematurely. No Touchie, and if so, clean with alcohol and swab. Costs less too, as bulbs last much longer.

Low beam headlights do not work, but high beam headlights do

Clyde,

I've been troubleshooting this same problem on a different vehicle this week, and I can give you the steps I'd take.

1. If both sides went out at the same time, the problem is *NOT* likely to be the bulbs.

2. Check the fuses to see if both low beam lights are on the same fuse. Many cars have one fuse for low beam and another for high beam, so both lights out at the same time typically means fuse blown.

3. If the headlights are OK and the fuses are OK, then the problem is *LIKELY* the headlight switch. In my case, AutoZone has one and it can be installed easily; but in your case, that may not be as simple.

Please post your findings or comments.
