We are traveling on the road and i noticed yesterday it started slow then as the day wore on it didn't run as good turned it off at a rest area like to never got it started stopped at walmart changed the filter now it wont start, but wants to
Anytime you change the filter in a diesel you have to bleed the air out of the fuel system. The pump won't auto bleed the fuel system for you. every place in the fuel system that has a flare type connection needs to be bleed, start at the connection closest to the tank, loosen the connection and then crank the engine until you see diesel fuel drips from that connection. Tighten the connection while the engine is still cranking. Move to the next connection that is going toward the engine. Continue on in that manner toward the engine until you reach the injector pump/injector. Once you reach the injector pump be VERY aware that the fuel is at VERY high pressure. Do NOT put your body parts in the stream of high pressure diesel fuel. It could kill or injure you! Once you bleed all the way to the injector pump/ injector, the truck SHOULD start. Do not bleed after the injector pump because of the pressure involved, it is WAY too dangerous.
Good luck!

That
red wire is only for the fuel heater.will not cause a no start.try pumping
the primer pump on top of the fuel flter hsg. but first open the bleed
screw, which is black plastic also located on the top.this will eliminate any
trapped air that might have entered the fuel intake system.if the pump does
not get firmer and harder to push, then you have a leak in the fuel supply
lines or the ck valves in the fuel filter hsg or stuck open. Still no start
have it scanned to ck fuel pressure while cranking.it should be close to 5000
lbs
SOURCE: Flywheel area, possibly transmission
the noise might be from a loose bendix on the starter,
the bendix is a little gear in fron of the starter see if there is any visual point to see it nad make sure it keeps away from the flywheel if not have the starter repalced, this bendix have a spring to keep it away from the flywheel also with a flash ligh try to see the closes you can to the center of flywheel sometimes they get crack where they atached to the engine,
and on the shifting might be a bad transmission or the shifter has to be inspected for your mechanic

if it dont have good compression it will not start check the comp and make sure there no water in oil if fuel pressure is low it will not pop the injector open try some starting fluid
SOURCE: turns over but wont start
you need to find out if your missing spark at plugs or fuel pressure, you could hear the pump but that doesn't tell you if you have 5psi or 55psi,
you will need a fuel preesure gauge and check that on the fuel rail redd valve if you end up having spark
