I accidently put in unleaded and someone told me u need a solutuion first in the tank as its a classic car and then put fuel i it? probably ruined it now
hi tom its a fiat x1/9 reg c83 cst, 1498 cc engine, petrol, it had a little bit of fuel in it so i went to the garage to fill it up a tiny bit put £5 of unleaded in it and then it never worked after that and someone said u might need a soultion to add into the fuel? so who knows, its been in a garage for over 1yr now and it has a flat battery, and an oil leek and no one will look at it asked all the local mechanics claire hi tom its a fiat x1/9 reg c83 cst, 1498 cc engine, petrol, it had a little bit of fuel in it so i went to the garage to fill it up a tiny bit put £5 of unleaded in it and then it never worked after that and someone said u might need a soultion to add into the fuel? so who knows, its been in a garage for over 1yr now and it has a flat battery, and an oil leek and no one will look at it asked all the local mechanics claire

Hi, My name is Tom and I need to get some info on your car. Make, year, engine type, how long it has been stored, was there any fuel in the car from before, was the old fuel drained, does the engine call for the good old leaded type? What is it that you think that you may have ruined? Tom.
First off, the battery needs to be charged up, load tested and terminals cleaned. I would then remove the spark plugs and put a couple squirts of 30 wt oil in each cylinder, reinstall spark plugs. After the battery was checked out and hooked up again, have some one check for spark where the plug wire attaches to the spark plug. This should be done by a mechanic as a spark should occur when you start to ground out the spark plug wire to a metal spot on the engine as the engine is turned over with the ignition on. But I stress that some one who knows cars should do this as a shock may occur. If you could call me I can give you more advice. There are also other ways that be used to check the condition of the engine that I can explain in greater detail if you can call. Thanks, Tom. 860-304-6366Claire,

Get under vehicle, find tank and see if it does, and if it does, park on a hill and let it drain into a container, put wrong gas in,huh. Then put some diesel in to flush gas out.
shouldnt hurt, might be a tiny bit smokey. you can't have put much in, where did you get it from...suspect a gallon can lying around?...just top the tank with more fresh fuel.
That is not a problem it is actually recommended that you use premium 93-94 Octane fuel, if you put turbo blue (115) in it that would be a problem but 93-94 octane is the VW recommended fuel type.
The small hose is a vent line that is put in place to do just that vent the fuel, many times fuel will back feed out the vent line when it is very hot outside due to expansion of the gases, also if you have a kink in the fuel fill line going into the fuel tank, if you can't physically see the kink you may have to have the tank dropped for a closer look especially if someone else was in the tank to repair something like the fuel pump etc. once before. it is possible they forced the fuel filler line into the tank without realizing they caused the "kinked line" situation, perhaps the fuel tank was damaged from an accident as well causing all these problems, look for anything that appears to be unusual such as dents, kinked lines, perhaps the fuel tank hanger straps were jarred and the fuel tank was moved into a wrongful fit under the vehicle.
Has the car been serviced recently?
If not I would suggest getting it done. Not sure if you have diesel or petrol, but oil can thicken causing more load on the motor and airfilters get blocked and can cause a rich fuel mixture.
If petrol you can take out the plugs to check if they are a light brown colour, if very dark or black you need to check and adjust carb/injection settings/filter.Need to know what engine it is really.
check all of the vaccum lines and check the timing and see if they have any thing at the auto store for diesel to put in the tank you may have also got a bad tank of diesel fuel. i also had something like this once happen to me and the tank i got it was not diesel someone had put unleaded in that tank by mistake
Hi Claire,
You are having fun with your little Fiat.... Not !
Yes.. it is recommended that you run your classic Fiat engine on leaded fuel, as this give lubrication to the valves and stems on the engine cylinder head.
If you have been running the car for more than a tank or two of unleaded fuel, you will start giving wear to the valves and guides.
I recommend you charge up your battery and see if you can get it running again.
There is an additive you can put in to the fuel tank, to make your fuel compatible with your engine, available a Halfords.
I hope I have been of help.
Notify me if you have any further questions that you need answering.
Have you flushed out all of the old unleaded fuel from the system and fitted a new fuel filter? Unleaded fuel only lasts for a very short while before going off. You need to flush out the tank and the fuel lines and then put fresh fuel in the tank and fit a new fuel filter or you could be leading yourself on a wild goose chase.
Do you hear the fuel pump running for a second or two when you switch on the ignition? If not then you need to check the fuel pump positive terminal for battery voltage with a volt meter whilst someone switches on the ignition for you, and check the fuel pump negative terminal to ensure it is properly earthed.
If you have a live and an earth at the pump but the pump still isn't running then you need to renew the fuel pump.
If these suggestions don't solve your problem then I'll need to know what size engine is in the car before I advise you further.
