The clutch is slipping.

Is there any way to attack this problem without replacing the clutch (which is quoted to me at around $800)?

Assuming the hydraulic part of the clutch is working correctly, the clutch disc is probably worn out and would need to be replaced.
When you push on the clutch pedal you use hydraulic fluid to move the disc just like pushing on the brakes.

2004 Celica clutch is slipping after car is underway .Say you are going 30 and accelerate the clutch will slip

It sounds like your clutch plate has worn away so slips when under pressure ie,pulling up hill or a heavy right foot.An easy way to test this is to pull your hand break on and try to pull away,if your revs lift without pulling the car then its slipping, there are clutch kits out there for around 50-70,they come with a new clutch plate, new bearing and a new preasure plate. If you do the job yourself make certain that no oily hands or grease gets anywher near the new clutch plate as i found out to my expence. It slipped as the old 1 did so had to do the job twice.Good luck and hope this helps.

1998 Ford Escort ZX2 Clutch replacement

Clutch life depends entirely on how the clutch has been treated. If it hasn't been driven abusively, it could conceivably last the life of the car. To try it out, put it in top gear around 30mph and floor the gas. If the clutch is going to slip anywhere, it's here. If the car gains speed without the RPM shooting up, the clutch is fine and you should have no worries about her making it safely across the country.

Where is the slave cylinder on a 2005 suzuki forenza

M/T car with a clutch
the slave is the device that pushes the clutch lever , as it enters the clutch bell housing (the hunk of alum. that is between the engine and trans 'bell shaped..)
400 or 4000? , my guess is you mean, 4000 rpm
3000 on the round is normal./
the engine should idle at 800 rpm.
that is just 1 tick below the 1 (1 = 1000 on the scale see the 1k or
x1000 on the dial, that means all numbers are times 1000.
so point 8 rpm is 0.8 x 1000 or 800.

do not ride the clutch pedal or you will buy many a clutch.
the save bad, never cause, slipping clutch. (near impossible)
the hyd, clutch actuator is self adjusting as clutch wears.
the clutch will grind gears if the slave fails. the slave annoucces its bad in advance buy loss of fluid on ground and level drop on the cutch master cylinder.
post the symptoms, and ask for help based on those facts.
a slipping clutch is a bad clutch. (or soaked in oil, and same )
please repost real RPMs using the x1000 scale factor for best answer
and when they happen.

Re: prices that varies from city to city based on labor rates and parts suppliers. Your other question - If you plan on driving and keeping your truck then yes - replace clutch, pressure plate & throw out bearing and have flywheel resurfaced (you don't need to replace flywheels unless they have deep cracks or has heat damage)

I have a 2002 bmw m3 with a worn sync ring causing occasional clutch slippage. what should i be looking at for repair costs?

The Syncromesh rings would not cause clutch slip. Sync rings assist in engaging gears without grating. Clutch slippage is normally due to a worn clutch plate or weak diaphragm. Difficult to say what the costs will be because spares alone will run onto at least $200, but shop around for the best price, but remember this is a performance car and the cheapest quote may not be the wisest one.

Car slipping in uphill acceleration is it my tires or something more is wrong with it?

Hi,
If the engine is revving but your not going forward then it sounds like your clutch is slipping if it is a manual, or the clutch packs are worn if it is an automatic transmission. Either way the clutch or transmission will need to be repaired or replaced. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

Transmition

Doubtful, unless the unit is low on oil. slipping is caused by low pressure which burns internal clutches etc and can only be cured by replacing them. They are very thin and don't put up with much abuse.

I have a 98 Subaru Forester, and the clutch has finally given out...to replace the clutch I was quoted between $800 - $1300 - so its not worth it to have it fixed. Engine runs fine, shifting has no effect...

Sorry for your loss, you should be able to get it changed for less, around 600.  Did the clutch slip at all before it broke?  Can you now put the car in any gear with engine idling w/out the pedal?  If yes, then the clutch is worn to nothing.  If no, then it's a broken pressure plate or clutch cable.  Does it feel like there is no pedal pressure at all?  This indicates no cable or hydraulic pressure (if your is hydraulic) and a cheaper fix.  Good luck!

Clutch replacement cost

8-10 hrs is more accurate, call around to other repair shops and ask what the flat rate time is for a clutch change on your make and model, most clutch jobs run around $600-800.
