I just got this jeep from my father when he passed away last month I know little about it or its upkeep. I do know I tried to start it a couple days ago and it just wouldnt start, I left it alone for a bit and came back and it roared back to life. I had taken it to Advanced auto and their computer tells me its a catalyst deficiancy, when I went to leave the auto shop it started to buck, and rev when I was stopped going down hill, and then started doing it and almost like, stalled when I tried to accelerate, first time thats happened but I am unsure what to do with it.

I had a similiar problem it turned out be the catalytic converter. I believe there was a recall for this problem.

First (I"M starting to sound like a broken record on this) check the ground connections at both ends of the cable.(smaller body grounds as well) Make sure they are clean where they make contact with block and terminal post (not just on the outside.) Make sure hot wire is also clean and fastened correctly. Right now, we are trying to find out what it's not., Then, you can get to what it is.Often small stupid things can look like other larger problems.

First check fluid. Make sure it's full and clean and does not smell burned (compare to another good car)
Converter failure is usually most obvious when trans shifts to OD. if shift is late or makes bang noise going in, you likely have a problem. to check lockup, after od engages, lightly touch brake, trans should momentarily shift out of od. Whining is usually due to low fluid. Also check transfer case and both differentials for proper level and leaks.

how long has this been happing..one tank of fuel or more, could have been bad gas, replace filter,, put gas dryier in fuel tank..if it continues could possibly be transmission related..the reving down doesn't sound like transmission though if tansmission was slipping it would rev up..good luck

Check and clean the idle control solenoid and passages, check the throttle position sensor and perhaps the crank sensor. Don't buy anything without testing or you will be spending money on stuff you don't need.
If stumped, get a chiltons or haynes manual and go through the test procedures they outline. Any good shop does this and you should too!
If it tends to stall that tells me that the iac is possibly opening late (sticking) but that can also happen if it gets bad information from the control system. (where testing is important)

Hi hellfang17, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
Did Advanced say you need new catalytic converter? Was the Jeep not driven for some time before you got it?
