2000 Elantra manual trans car won't crank

I have a 2000 Elantra manual drive with 100 K miles. This car ran great until this evening. Now it is not starting. The battery is relatively new and appears to be functioning OK. All of the other electrics are working OK except refusing to crank.
In another forum I read about a possible problem with clutch safety switch. Does the manual transmission one has this switch?

Appreciate the responses

Tried to start the car in shift lever in neutral with clutch fully pressed - nothing happened.

Tried to start the car in the 1st gear with clutch fully pressed

While the suggested resistance check of the clutch safety switch should catch a bad switch. However it may still be bad. I had the experience on my 2001 Elantra with the same problem happening intermittently. I checked and I had the delay check the switch and it looked okay. After three more trips and having them test other things including replacing the Starter motor under warranty they just replaced the switch. No more problem until 3 years later same thing started happening. I asked them to specifically check this and they just adjusted how far the switch button stuck out for teh clutch pedal to engage it under the dash. 4 days later it happened again. I said f it or something like that and went and bought the 15 dollar switch and put it in myself. I've not had a problem since then. But then I'm just coming up to the 3 yr anniversary of that switch.
You can also just bypass the switch and remember not to crank your starter without the clutch engaged unless you want to experience what whiplash is like firsthand.
Just change the switch.

The neutral safety switch is the switch located on your clutch pedal, it activates when the clutch is down to prevent you from starting it in 1st gear and so on.

Here is how you test the switch. With a $8.00 volt ohms meter you can unplug the leads from the switch on the clutch pedal. Connect your ohms meter to the switch and have someone depress the clutch. or remove the switch and same idea.
If depressed the ohms meter swings over to the right, switch is good, if not, replace it.

You never drive even ten miles with ANY trans issue,
unless you plan on ruining it

You always diagnose & resolve All code related issues
BEFORE you can diagnose trans issues

The trans strategy is part of & based off a complete powertrain
package working properly & together

Diagnose all codes, fix those issueS,then work on the trans
solenoid for od & any codes it has.

Do not use it until ALL Issues are 100% THE ENTIRE VEHICLE

2000 elantra. I have to first put the transmition In drive then back to reverse to get reverse to engauge? Also the car will not goto overdrive. It has 118000 miles on it.

the shift band or the switch is bad replace the switch first and if that do not work its time for a rebuild or just the trans get a new shift band put in any way hope this helps.

2000 Durango w/5.2 ltr., automatic trans, and 198,000 miles. Transmission slips when first started until I drive for 2 miles or so. After that no problem.

this is a common problem with the dodge it is caused by the lip-seals inside the trans. getting hard from all the heating up and cooling down. the reason it goes away after it worms up is that the seals soften up with the heat it will get worse over time but there are some things you can do to help with the problem. first service the trany. ( change the filter and fluid ) and try adding some TRANS-X trany. treatment we have had great luck with this product in the past.

Trans drops into 3rd gear won,t shift to 4th

DTC P0734 is "4th gear incorrect ratio" - that's your torque converter 'LOCK UP Clutch" It's worn out (or you're using the wrong Trans Fluid required by Hyundai - SPIII OR Both). The P1624 is simply the Trans Control Unit (computer) communicating to the Engine Control Module (ECM computer) MIL - on request signal to ECM = asking it to turn on "Check Engine" light. MIL = Malfunction Indicator Lamp. When the torque converter 'lock up" clutch slips or doesn't engage, the trans automatically returns to 3rd gear and stays there (it's called 'fail safe' mode) until you cycle the ignition key, then everything resets until the malfunction occurs again.
You'll need to have an AT (Automatic Transaxel) tester hooked up to verify this. Hyundai has a Service Bulletin specifically for "gear incorrect ratio' codes. If when you changed the trans fluid, was it done at a Hyundai Service Center? If not, someone may have installed the wrong fluid.

Not going into gear

have you checked your brake lights? are they working? most cars have a safety feature that require a signal from brake lights (by stepping on brake pedal) to activate a relay to disengage the shifter interlock, OR can you move the gear selector into gear, and it just won't move? is it an automatic or stick shift ? If it's an automatic start the car, after it has ran for 5 - 10 minutes check the trans fluid dipstick, it should have fluid level between add / full marks , if not add or remove fluid as necessary. If is a manual trans, it is possible the clutch is bad. need more info on vehicle, how many miles? engine size?
