I ran the gas to the light coming on, filed it up to 3/4, noticed within 24 hours, a slight...hucklebuck, for lack of a better word. It got more noticible the more i drove it. My husband changed the plugs, air filter. It is also putting out carbon? deposits from the exaust pipe when started, no black smoke after the initial start.... Im going to change the fuel filter next but is there any other explanation you could give than, dirty or water tainted gas?? Any help is appreciated.

Never allow Saturn touch a Saturn.
During the oil change, the Saturn dealer loosened the center positive electrical battery cable at the main fuse box, drivers side, under hood.
The loose positive cable results in an electrical surge that wipes out the cps.
The new cps is only avaqilable from Saturn.
When the new cps is delivered, one electrical pen will be bend down and must be straightened prior to insertion of male and female electrical connector to the cps. Otherwise the new cps will fail.
Be certain to tighten the center positive post of three that secure the main fuse box in place. The center post must be tightened to ensure the new cps is not destroyed by subsequent electrical surges which result when Saturn Dealer loosens the center fuse box post.

This sounds like a plugged evap valve. Try opening the gas cap when this happens. If the evap system is malfunctioning, it will use gas, but will not let air back in to replace the liquid leaving the tank thus collapsing the tank and cutting off fuel. It then takes a while to break the vacuum in the tank. If the car starts right away when you open the gas cap, have your evap system serviced by a professional. Another quick diagnosis is to take a look at the fuel tank. If it has been collapsed there will be small creases in it.
I just had this problem on a 97 Saturn.

you have leaking fuel injectors they are fouling out plugs.

Your problem is most likey your intake gasket. They have a problems on the SOHC engines where the intake gasket shifts & starts leaking vacuum at the #1 intake runner causing a missfire on Cylinder #1.While the engine is Idling buy some throttle plate cleaner & spray throttle cleaner down at the #1 Intake runner where the intake meets the head.If engine stalls or runs rougher that's your problem.I have replaced dozens of those gaskets for tha reason!! They have a beter design gasket through saturn parts. It has a coating on it to prevent reoccurance. Also you should check you Coolant Temp Sensor,if it's ceramic it's most likely bad.Replacement is brass from saturn.Good Luck

I would look at the egr system. First pull the valve and clean it. If you have a vacuum tester this would be a good time to test the valve itself as well. When under load you should be able to see the diaphragm engage and hold and then release as you release the vacuum. If that doesn't work check and/or replace the egr solenoid. It's located on the driver's side of the valve cover and usually runs about 60$.
Yours is a common complaint and the above is the most common remedy. Outside of that you might want to check and clean the idle air control valve and the port where it's housed. If it is extremely dirty or something managed to get stuck in there that could affect you vehicle running at idle as well.
Another thing, even though you just changed the plugs, pull one back out and look at it. If is fouled with oil you might need a new valve cover gasket which if it's leaking badly enough will impede spark.
