My mechanic says the left side has no electrical power for the headlight. That's his reason for my headlight not working. He checked wiring and that seems to be okay. . . .
Well all i can say is he is not much of a mechanic for not fixing it for you so i suggest you find a better one ,sorry to sound so hard but ?? Their is always a way around any problem if going back to basics to know the problem ,no power ? then re run a new cable from the switch ,easy or am i being over simplistic here. What would have happened if i hadnt got the lorries to run and be on the road when the drivers start work at 07.00 in the morning .i would have been out of work ,fired ,sacked or whatever you want to call it
CHECK LEFT HEADLIGHT FUSE.VOLVO HEADLIGHTS CIRCUIT USES TWO SEPERATE FUSES ONE FUSE FOR LEFT HEADLIGHT ONE FUSE FOR RIGHT HEADLIGHT. IF FUSE OKAY GROUND LEFT HEADLIGHT SEE IF IT WORKS.COULD HAVE BAD GROUND.

cut the wire at bulb install female wire connector
SOURCE: Volvo V40 Driver side electric window . Goes down
sounds like a missing tooth or stripped gear on the motor or moon gear on the regulator, the door will have to be taken apart and the regulator or motor replaced. If you can grab the top of the glass with your fingers GENTLY pull up while pressing the switch. it may catch another tooth and go up. (**Do not use pliers or any other tool to grab the glass**)
Hope this helps
SOURCE: Volvo S40 Low beam headlight
Sounds like a wire to me. It's definitely not fuses (unless the fuses have been split for left and right hand side which I have never come across, but we are talking about volvo lol) so I'd say most likely there'd be a break somewhere in the harness. The driver's side probably blew as all the power gets sent to one side when one bulb isn't working - so it's working twice as hard usually - making it more susceptable to blowing.
SOURCE: How to adjust headlights on 2001 volvo V40
The adjustment screws/nuts should be located either on the top of the headlamp assembly,
behind the headlamp assembly, or near the frame rail by the radiator
support.
You will have vertical adjustment screws for each independent beam
(separate highs and separate lows, but will be same screw if highs and
lows are the same bulb). You may also have additional horizontal
adjustment screws as well
Park
your car on a level ground 30 feet from a wall and measure the height
from the ground to the bulb and mark on a wall (do this for highs beams
and low beams if the bulbs are separate, if highs and lows are the same
bulb, only do it for the lows)
For Low Beams: If the headlights read VOR, then
aim the brightest part or cutoff part just below the mark on the wall.
If it says VOL or nothing, aim them 2 inches below the mark on the wall.
For High Beams (if separate from low beams): Aim the headlight directly at the line you marked on the wall.
