Question about 1991 Jeep Wrangler

Open Question

My 91 Jeep Wrangler sways and has really loose steering. It is hard to keep it on the road from the play in the steering

I bought the jeep on 12/12/12. It is a 91 Jeep Wrangler YJ 4X4 2.5l 4cy 5speed transmission. The jeep has really loose steering and as I drive the Jeep floats back and forth. I can barly keep it off the lines on both end. This is my first jeep, I have been trying to find some type of schematics online that I can view. Somewhere that will let me view every part of that Jeep and list what is what. I would like to learn this thing over and over but I cannot find out where to start.

i had the same problem. i drive a 95 so im not sure if it differs from were the fuse box is. look righ above you pedals to your far left. it should be right there. also if you instruments went out it will be a 15 fuse. its a blue fuse. next my panel went out cuz of the wires on my transmission. if yor looking at your jeep at the front. the wires will be on your left. make sure they are not burned or anything. it will be right on the side of your tranny. mind got burned by the exaust so they were shorting. check that is and see if that is what is it. for a temp fix just put some electrical tap around the wires and you should be set for a wile. good luck

You have two locations for the fuse box. One is either under the hood or behind the glove box. I would pull apart the glove box and take a look.

It does sound like a vacuum leak. Get a can of WD-40 and start spraying around the carb. It will rev up, and U can pin point the loose vacuum hose, are crack vacuum hose.

Check the coolant sensor, cam and crank sensor and make sure they are all plugged in.

My steering is very loose on the road.


Their is a few things it could be depending on what kind of loose you are talking about if you mean play in the steering wheel you can adjust that out with a allen wrench on top of the steering box but if your talking about swaying loose that could be either a leaf spring bushing or a swaybar bushing.

Sloppy Steering I just purchased a used 91 Jeep Wrangler. The steering is a little sloppy. Is this common? Is there anything to check to verify that it is not due to excessive wear or a loose or broken...


I know a lot of people who have jeeps and operate them off road. Usual problems include loose steering from worn or damaged suspension and/or steering components and a bumpy ride due to blown bushings, shocks, or suspension components as well. Yours may not have endured the same abuse but I'd suggest first checking your tire pressure, tread for even wear on all tires and then I'd have an alignment done (if you have damaged components they will tell you before they can align your vehicle) and that will give you an idea of what is wrong with it

Install rear sway bar


a sway bar is usually u shaped and hooks to the body and the tops of the u hook to the axle with links that have bushings. most jeeps dont have a rear sway bar.the panhard bar is the rod that goes from one side of the axle to the body on the opposite side. its sometimes mistakenly called sway bar. it keeps the body from moving side to side around corners. then there are the torque bars they keep the axle from trying to rotate when accelerating.
none of this would be real expensive but if its been lifted a bunch then you may have problems

What they were referring to is disconnecting the sway bar. Located in the front of the jeep, you will see a bar that is bolted to the frame below the grill on the underside of the jeep. This bar will curve around and have links that drop off of it and attach to each end of the front axle.

The purpose of the bar is to control body sway in turns. By unbolting the lower bolt on the drop link at each end of the axle, you free up the suspension to articulate more to it's capability. The upside to this, is with more articulation in the suspension, you will be able to keep the tires in contact with the ground easier. Obviously, in offroad conditions, the more your tires are in contact with the ground, the more capable the vehicle.

The downside to this is you will have a noticeable increase in the amount of body roll your jeep has in turns on the street. On the street, the less body roll the better.

A common solution to this is to install Sway Bar Quick Disconnects. They basically replace the lower bolt in the drop links with a pin that is easily removed to play off-road, then quickly replaced when you head back out on the road.

You should be able to find them pretty easily with a simple google search for Sway Bar Quick Disconnects.

If it's the anti-sway bar you are refering to then yes you can, just dont corner very fast, normal driving will be fiine.
I have worked on cars and found them broken and the owners didn't even know it.

you might think its tight but its not. it could be worn on the inside where the gears are and never know it. i would change the pitman arm soon

not really i had a 1995 and the a/c was seperate. who needs a/c with a soft top anyways. so in short no they weren't tricking you it was seperate
