1991 alfa romeo 164 manual
all the buttons work, the blower works, good a/c but no heat will blow and the defrost blows only cold
Although I fixed the problem, I got a quick response from David quickly and wanted to post.
On my 1991 164L you pull the rod towards the interior of the car for heat (opening valve), push to firewall for cold (closing valve). Also, if you have that annoying clicking just remove the plug from the actuator and quiet times prevail...

Is this in regards to an Alfa 164?
If so, open glove compartment and remove the square fascia plate (upper left) with flat blade screwdriver. Best if you disconnect the control wiring in front once that plate is removed. The lever arm is directly inside, maybe 3-4" back. Take a flashlight to see it, there's a solid cable lead coming off an actuator.
I'm don't recall which way is heat, either all the way forward or all the way towards you.
Your hand should be able to fit thru the opening. Try pulling the cable/arm towards you first, if it won't move than it needs to go forward....all the way.
Not sure if you have solved this one. Most likely the little nylon teeth in the gearing of the troublesome stepper motor that operates the hot/cold valve are stripped. you might have heard some clicking right before it it came to rest in the position it is in right now. Most of us 164 owners have gone thru this problem and either replaced either the gears (back when the Aussie was offering cast bronze replacement gears) or the whole motors assembly. Unfortunately both are difficult.
You can manually reach in and physically move the valve position, happy to explain. Email me at [email protected] and I'll walk you thru it.
