I have an 2002 Chevy Impala, when I go to crank my car it won't do anything. I have to play with the ignition by turning the key back and forth in order for it to crank. what is that?

When I turn the key all the interior lights on come and the dash lights are on, but the car still will not crank. It takes me 15-20 minutes to get my car cranked everyday, some days it will start right up but majority of the time I have to play with the key and the ignition to get the car to start. Would this be my alternator or problems with the ignition

Why do so many people ask about an Alternator ?

It has nothing to do with the starting system

You said you have to play with the key & ignition switch
that may be a place to start

Check the ignition and Engine relay switches located under the hood. Sometimes relays go weak with age and even a bump on the road will shut them off. If you can turn the truck on, take it to Autozone or similar store for a free DTC scan code.

My 2005 Chevy Impala all of the sudden just shut down at the light and won't crank or do anything when I turn the key nothing. It just shows me a check engine light?

Connect it to a code reader scan tool. The engine light codes will tell you some of the reason, but Jeff's answer is far better than mine regarding how all this stuff works..

2002 chevy impala won't start if I jump starter

Is the security light on or flashing ?
The yellow wire goes from the key switch to the neutral safety switch, then to the starter. So bypassing the neutral safety would make the starter crank the engine, but would have nothing to do with the rest of the engine.

I have a 2001 Chevy Impala LS that won't crank,

I doubt it has anything to do with the key switch.
If the security system is the cause, the security warning light should be on.
Someone would need to check the circuit between the key switch and the starter when it fails to crank to find the problem.

My 2005 chevy impala won't start since someone broke into my car

i would say when the person broke into your car they set off the security system which stops the car from starting, the way to reset the security is to put your key into the ignition turn the key until all the dash lights come on and let them stay on about 15 minutes after the 15 minutes have expired turn the key off and wait about 3 seconds and then your car should start. hope this helps.

My securty light is on in my 2002 chevy impala and my car wont start. how do i fix the problem

The GM PASSLOCK system is the probable cause, Try a different ignition key. If that doesn't solve the problem continue reading:
A Scan Tool can be used to read and erase trouble codes, display, record and play back LIVE diagnostic data and perform other tests allowed by the vehicle maker. Scan tools that cover vehicles 1982 to present are available at your local auto supply dealer.

You don't indicate any diagnostic tests to date. A dealer or your local mechanic will charge $100-$200 to perform a diagnostic scan. However, AutoZone will provide a thorough scan for FREE. Anyone who tells you that a modern vehicle can be diagnosed without a scanner with the problems you have set forth is merely guessing.

2001 chevy impala security light keeps coming on

This is a problem with chevy vehicles that have the system theft light. after a couple of years of using the key, the lock tumblers inside the ignition switch tend to wear out and so causing the system to think it's being stolen. Now you have to put the key in and turn the ignition to the on position, without cranking the car and leave it for 10 minutes until the theft light goes out. Very annoying especially if you're in a hurry. The dealer cost to repair the ignition switch goes for about $600-$800. that includes re-teaching the key.

Starting

Does a light come on that looks like a lock?? This is GMs Passlock problem. It a fault in the ignition cylinder. The car won`t turn over. If you remove the key, the car will start in 8 to 10 minutes. Some have found that spraying an electronic spray or silicone based spray in the ignition and rapidly turning the key back and forth may help. Repeat this several times. Replacing the ignition switch is an expensive option, but may have to be done.
