It doesn't make a noise at all when I try. Also, on the instrument panel, the line under the PRNDL is not registering/displaying when I shift from gear to gear, making me think the car is not recognizing when it is in gear. Last week it was starting hit and miss, the AAA guy had me try to start it in P, then N, no dice. Then when I put it back in P it started right up. It has gotten worse since then and won't start at all. Battery voltage is showing 11.8 on the display. Had the alternator replaced recently. Any suggestions?
The transmission range switch could be bad , but ,without testing that is a guess . That's why the AAA guy had you try it in neutral an park . Do you know what a park netural safety switch is . The trans range switch is an input to the PCM/ECM engine computer ! The PCM/ECM shares this info to the instrument cluster over the class 2 serial data communication network , do you know about networks for the computer system on your vehicle. What happens when you turn the key to start your vehicle ?
Starting System Circuit Description
Moving the ignition switch to the CRANK position sends a 12 V signal to the PCM ignition crank request input. The PCM verifies that it has received a valid theft password from the vehicle's theft deterrent module and that the transmission is in the PARK or NEUTRAL position. The PCM then grounds the control circuit of the START 1 relay. When the START 1 relay is energized it completes the B+ voltage circuit to the starter solenoid S terminal.
With the line under the PRNDL not registering/displaying it sounds like a range sensor switch problem . This could be very challenging even to a professional Technician . At the dealer i would hook up the Tech 2 scan tool an see the range switch data at the PCM . Easy as pie . Someone without that tool have to do testing with a volt meter , find the connector at the transmission or PCM ,which ever is easiest to get to .Also checking DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes at all modules on the vehicle . There are videos on youtube on testing range sensor switch , park neutral safety switch .

you can reset the system by turning key to on position for 5-10 mins and then try starting it but its probably a short or grounding prob try the engine to chassis ground
The car is not reading the key and thinks someone is trying to steal it. Try another key or see a dealer.

check battery voltage, if battery voltage is ok, you may need to check fuses under hood on passengers side, if start fuse is ok, you may need to have your starter replaced

It sounds like your batery is empty.
Or maybe your start rotor is a bit stuck.
if so give it a hit with a rubber hammer that can help loosen it.

IT SEEMS SMETHINGS IS DRAINING THE BATTERY,MAKE SURE YOU DO NO LEAE THE KEY IN IGNITION BECAUSE IT HAS PAT KEY IT WILL DRAIN,BEST WAY TO FIND THE DRAIN,DISCOUNNECT ONE OF THE BATERY CABLE,PLACE AN AMMETER IN SERIES,WATCH THE READING,PULL EACH FUESE OUT FROM FUSE BOX (ONE IS LOCATED UNDER HOOD DRIVER SIDE,ONE UNDER REAR SEAT) WICHEVER FUSE THAT REMOVED AND CAUSE AMMETER DROP TO ZERO THE CIRCUIT THAT IS FED FRM FUSE IS THE PROBLEM ( MAY BE A GLOVE OR TRUNK LIGHT THAT STAYS ON OR OHER STUFF LIKE THAT)
