Either the clutch has failed, or something inside the transmission has broken.
Can you shift gears with the engine running and not depressing the clutch ? Can you put the transmission in first gear and move the car by hand ?

SOURCE: stuck clutch pedal

you have a leak in the clutch hydraulic system. without the spring tension from the clutches pressure plate the the pedal wont return. it is likely that the leak is at the slave cylinder, which is inside the bell housing. to replace it the transmission must be removed.

SOURCE: Clutch disk or gear disk or could it be engine seat

there is a recall for this-go to the dealer-it is a clutch bearing machining defect or something like that-they will fix it if your car was affected as indicated by your VIN number. they have to verify the problem first then they will do it for free.....should take about 3hrs

SOURCE: Mazda 626 - Hard to shift into gear.

With any vehicle that has a hydraulic clutch, a worn master cylinder or slave cylinder will give this very symptom. First step is to check the fluid in the resivor. If it is low, you will want to check for fluid bypassing the seals. Be sure to check under the rubber dust cover as fluid can collect there and not be readily visible. Also, if the fluid in the resivor is dark colored, it is an indication of the internal seals going bad and you will need to replace the cylinders.

SOURCE: Low gears wont slide into gear when in traffic jams or hot.

Sounds like you do need a clutch adjustment.Do you have a hydraulic clutch?Check beside the brake master cylinder and look for a SMALLER size master cylinder which may be low on fluid.(PUT ONLY BRAKE FLUID IN TO FILL IT).Hopefully it is just low and the brake fluid fill will restore your clutch adjustment.

97 vw gti will not shift into gear when car is on but shifts into gear when turned off just fine , will f Grind if I force it into gear when car is running , pedal feels a little stiff as well ,

The clutch is not releasing/disengaging. Your clutch linkage (if you have mechanical linkage) or hydraulic clutch system may not be working properly to release the clutch. If you had the work done by a shop, take it back to them and explain the problem. They should stand behind their work.

1998 Honda Civic manual trans will not shift into gears. Car starts, push in clutch and it goes to the floor, release clutch and comes back up. Unable to put into gears. Brake fluid and clutch fluid seem...

Eric, how are you confirming whether or not the car goes into gear if you shift gears without the engine running? One way would be to put it in 1st and see if you can push the car. If you can't, it is in gear.

Another option is to roll the car slightly forward or backward (engine off) while trying to put the car in gear. Once it is in gear, then the car shouldn't move any further. However, if it goes into gear, DO NOT start the car without taking it back out of gear.

The clutch is much more likely to be the problem than the transmission.

If the clutch fluid ever ran dry, then the clutch hydraulics will need to be bled of air. Otherwise, the problem could be the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder or throwout bearing. Since you didn't report the clutch slipping (e.g. engine revving without accelerating when in gear) it is likely not the clutch disks themselves.

Noise when shifting gears

transmission synchronizers most common cause of transmisson noise in certain gears, and not others, might want to check the gear oil level. Transmission rebuild required. To read about them and what they actually do, then here is a good read:
When you shift gears in your standard shift car, you move a rod that moves a fork that engages the gear. Depending which gear you're shifting to, a different fork does the job. The fork moves the collar to the desired gear, and dog teeth on the collar mesh up with holes on the gear in order to engage it. You engage reverse gear through a separate, small idler gear. The reverse gear always turns in the opposite direction of the other (forward) gears.
In years past, double-clutching was common in order to disengage a gear, allow the collar and next gear to reach the same speed, and then to engage the new gear. To double-clutch shift, you pushed the clutch pedal to free the engine from the transmission. Then the collar moved into neutral. You released the clutch and revved the engine to get it to the right rpm value for the next gear so the collar and the next gear spun at the same rate to allow the dog teeth to engage the gear. When the engine hit the right speed, you depressed the clutch again in order to lock the collar into place on the next gear.
Modern cars use synchronizers in order to avoid the need for double-clutching. A synchronizer, or "synchro," lets the collar and gear synchronize their speeds while they're already in contact but before the dog teeth engage. Each manufacturer's synchro is slightly different than the others, but the basic idea is the same. For instance, a cone on one gear will fit into a cone-shaped depression on the collar. The gear and collar synchronize their speeds thanks to the friction between the cone and collar. Then the outer part of the collar moves out of the way so that the gear can be engaged by the dog teeth.

When i start car with clutch in. i can shift through the gears. when i release in neutral and try it again i cant get into any gear. feels like a force is stopping me. and when car is off i can shift fine....

The clutch is your problem as it is not lifting enough to disengage when the engine is running .It may be an adjustment (if cable clutch) or if its hydraulic check for leaks ,also check to see how much the slave cylinder is moving when somebody presses the pedal (engine not running). If the clutch fork is moving enough then you are going to need a new clutch.
