My 2012 Forester has 5K miles. I occasionally hear a rattling noise after I start the vehicle and put it in drive or reverse and am turning out of a driveway or parking lot. The noise stops after about 15 minutes of driving. I had my first oil change at 4000 miles and the dealer said they took the car for a test drive, heard no noise, and their inspection of the car found nothing. Any ideas or similar problems?
Could be the catalytic converter heat shields, or the exhaust heat shields bolted to the underbody. Might also be the catalytic converter internal converter honeycomb broken loose. Unusual, but can occur if excess unburned fuel is being passed to the converter. High fuel consumption is another clue.

Have you checked your belts? A piece of belt may have come off and been slapping under your hood, and then fell off completely. While it was slapping, your computer would have detected the slow down of pulleys etc. and caused your engine light to come on. Then when the piece broke off, everything would be back to normal. On mine, I got under there and there are rocks rattling in the heat shield. There are factory made holes in it, and the rocks sit in there like eggs in a carton and rattle when the engine hits a certain vibration frequency which is basically when it is at a stop light or idling. The repair shop wanted to charge to cut them off but I think I am going to drill bigger holes so the rocks fall out, as they are pretty tiny.

I have had both of these situations happen to me and they are completely unrelated.
The Rattle: If you have the factory wheels with the olds center caps, take them off. My husband tightened every screw on the car until he took the center caps off my wheels, and lo and behold, NO MORE RATTLE.
The Hard Starting: If you notice it starts hard and the RPMs are high, your throttle cable is sticking. I have this exact same problem with my 99 Intrigue GLS. The only way I can get it to quit is start and restart the car until it quits. Obviously not the best solution, but I would check your cable first before trying anything else.
