How do I replace the serpentine belt on a 1999 Kia Sephia?

1.8L Engine
  1. Using a belt tension gauge, measure the drive belt tension and compare with the following specifications:
    1. Alternator belt (new): 86-103 lbs. (383-461 N)
    2. Alternator belt (used): 68-86 lbs. (304-383 N)
    3. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (new): 110-132 lbs (491-589 N)
    4. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (used): 95-110 lbs. (422-491 N)

Fig. Using a tension gauge to measure the alternator belt tension - 1.8L engines (click HERE for zoom)

  2. Using the deflection method, apply moderate pressure (about 22 lbs) halfway between the pulleys, and compare with the following specifications.
    1. Alternator belt (new): 0.31-0.35 in. (8-9mm)
    2. Alternator belt (used): 0.35-0.39 in. (9-10mm)
    3. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (new): 0.31-0.35 in. (8-9mm)
    4. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (used): 0.35-0.39 in. (9-10mm)
  3. If the specifications fall outside the ranges given, adjust the belt as follows:
    1. Loosen the alternator mounting bolt and adjusting bolt.
    2. Adjust the alternator to get the specified belt deflection.
    3. Tighten the bolts, then recheck the tension.

Kia sephia 2000 automatic spring tension system. What is that? I am trying to put a new alternator belt on , and I'm suppose to loosn the tension pulley but my kia doesnt have a tension pulley on it. Now...

if it dont have an auto spring you need to loosen the bolts on the alternator and swing it in toward the engine, fit the belt then swing it out to tighten the belt before you do up the alt bolts NOT TOO TIGHT,

Hello lubyamanda and thank you for asking your question here on fixya.com.

I have actually written a general information article that will walk you through the general process of changing the fan belt on your
