Try this! start vehicle, while it is running remove the negative cable from battery. if it stays running the alternator is good. make sure battery connections are clean and tight. if checking alternator at battery, and you know its charging. then it has to be a short in wire from the alt. if the engine dies when testing as above. its either a bad alt, or a bad wire. or bad ground. good-day!

I forgot to mention that you should check the fuses to rule this out!

SOURCE: change spark plugs 2001 4 cyl hyundai sonata

You change One spark plug, and One wire at a time. Do you know where your timing belt is? If not, its on either the right or left side of the engine. There is a covor to the timing belt. You take the First plug that is closest to that belt. Then you work your way to the next closest all the way to the last one. Remember, you have to do ONE at a time.

SOURCE: possible bad alternator?

I went through three alternators before we found a good one for our saturn sl2. Now she has been good for two years. All I did was go back to where we bought it from, they hooked up the alternator to a machine and gave us a new one when it read that it was faulty.

WHERE IS THE SERPENTINE BELT LOCATED ON A 2003 HYUNDAI SONATA

Vehicles Covered: Hyundai Sonata 2002-2004 (2.4L & 2.7L Engines)

In 2003, Hyundai produced two types of Sonata:
Available engines:
4 Cylinders 2.4L VIN "S", MFI DOHC - see Figures 1 and 3.
6 Cylinders 2.7L VIN "H", MFI DOHC - see Figures 2 and 3.

To differentiate between these types of 2003 Hyundai Sonatas, the VIN 8th digit (Engine Type) will either be "S" or "H" as in the table above.

To locate the Engine drive belt, jack up the vehicle & place it onto jack stands, then slide under the car (toss a cardboard mat down first), then, once under the car, remove the (plastic) engine splash shield. Once removed, the drive & accessory belts are easily observed.

Fig. 1 Accessory Drive Belt Routing 2.4L (4 cyl) Engine - Hyundai Sonata
The "COMPRESSOR" refers to the A/C compressor, and "GENERATOR" refers to the Alternator.

Fig. 2 Accessory Drive Belt Routing 2.7L (6 cyl) Engine - Hyundai Sonata
The Belt Routing on the Left is "With A/C", on the Right is "without A/C"

Inspection - Drivebelt and Accessory Belts

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. Worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced.

Drivebelt Removal & Installation - 2003 Sonata (2.4L and 2.7L engines)

Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the engine splash shield.
Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to release the drive belt tension.
Remove the drive belt from the alternator.
Slowly release the drive belt tensioner.
Remove the drive belt from the accessory drive pulleys.

To install:

Install the drive belt to the accessory drive pulley.
Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise.
Install the drive belt to the alternator.
Ensure the drive belt is properly aligned and seated into the grooves of the accessory drive pulleys.
Slowly release the drive belt tensioner
Install the engine splash shield.
Lower the vehicle.

Here's the best illustration I can find of the Hyundai 2.4L and 2.7L engines - the drivebelt seems to be located on the passenger side of both of these transversely mounted engines.

How difficult is it to replace an alternator for a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. I'm moderately comfortable with do it yourself jobs, but never tried anything under the hood. Also, is there anything else that...

if you want to try it yourself, i would highly recommend getting a haynes auto repair book at a local auto parts store. around $20. it will give you step by step instructions. also, if you take it out, you can take it to an auto parts store and have them test it to see if it's bad. most do it for free.

Headlight bulbs: Burn out too often

I also having this problem with my Hyundai elite I20. My head light is also blew up 4 time in a year & finally gave my car to my nearest Hyundai dealer. They check out the problem and put my headlight for free as I was having warranty. Now my headlights are working good and hadn't replace the bulb since a year.
This was my experience, as you have Hyundai Sonata , either you should check out your nearest Hyundai dealer or here I am attaching you a video if you want to alone solve out this problem/issue of head light.

Charging system wont charge. i put a new alternator on and its still not working. thinking a bad wire some where or something but not sure

Check/test all charging system components. Have battery tested; check cables for good connection and corrosion; check belt for looseness or cracks; even if you just bought a new alternator, it could still be bad. There are alot of shops and parts stores that will check your charging system for free.
If it's discharging when vehicle is just sitting, probably a bad ground or loose wire somewhere.

Alternator

Alot of systems dont have a battery listed for 2001 hyundai sonotas so they will give you what "fits". These can touch metal parts of the car and ground the battery to the car. It will act like alternator problem and eventually kill the alternator because its overworked. I had this problem. Walmart and Advance gave me wrong batteries. I didnt know until I took it to the dealer.

Alternator

Answer Use a large wrench to take tension off of your serpentine belt and remove the belt from the alternator, (just the alternator). Disconnect the wires. Remove the bolts then the alternator. Put new alternator in place using old bolts. Replace wires (may only be one wire, depending on the alternator). Get your large wrench back out, put the belt back on the alternator, and your good to go. this should do it.
